Post-qualification Master's level programs in Israeli teacher education colleges were launched in 2004 under the governance of two nationwide policy bodies - the Council for Higher Education and the ...Ministry of Education - each holding different ideologies regarding the nature of these studies: one in accordance with a 'transmissive' and the other a 'transformative' model of professional development. In transmissive models, teachers are viewed as passive recipients, consumers of academic knowledge to be applied in practice, while in transformative ones, they act as self-inquirers, creating their own knowledge and acquiring professional autonomy. The dual subordination of the colleges of education to the two governing bodies raises the question which of these ideologies shaped the nature of the Master's programs in teacher education.
Respondents were 820 practicing teachers who had graduated in the years 2005-2015. The research focused on their motivations to study, their perceptions regarding the added value of the programs, and the effect these programs had on their actual professional development. Findings indicated that the dual subordination of teacher colleges to the two governing bodies, which have conflicting messages, interfered with full adaptation of the transformative model of professional development.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of effective professional development and effective models of professional development as perceived by school teachers in the State of ...Qatar. This study is quantitative in nature and was conducted using a survey methodology. Means, standard deviations, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized to analyze the collected data. Results of the study revealed that school teachers in Qatar perceived the proposed characteristics of effective professional development to be highly effective. Further, school teachers in Qatar perceived mentoring model (mentoring model (providing professional support from experienced teacher to new hiring teacher) as the most effective professional development model. However, an online training program was rated to be the least effective professional development model. Finally, results showed that there are no significant differences among school teachers in perceiving the proposed characteristics of effective professional development and in perceiving the most and the least effective professional development models that are attributed to their gender, years of experience in teaching, and school level.
This paper deals with the sustainable impact of innovations and professional development programmes. While research on this issue is rather scarce in educational disciplines (and in particular in ...mathematics teacher education), some other domains like health care or development aid are well grounded in research results regarding this topic. This article gives an insight into the other disciplines' knowledge concerning the impact of innovations and professional development programmes and the respective fostering and hindering factors. Moreover, possible implications for (mathematics) teacher education are discussed. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
The Banff International Research Station (BIRS) for mathematical innovation and discovery held a 5-day workshop entitled "Teachers as Stakeholders of Mathematics Education Research" from December ...5-10, 2010. This workshop co-organized by Guenter Toerner (University of Duisburg-Essen), Bharath Sriraman (University of Montana), Klaus Hoechsman (Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences, UBC-Canada), and Sharon Friesen (University of Calgary), followed up a successful workshop organized in Oberwolfach, Germany in 2007, and brought together 25 participants from all over the world. Participants included key members of the American Mathematical Society, the German Mathematical Society and the Canadian Mathematical Society, in addition to key educational policy makers from Germany, Austria and Australia. One of the goals of the workshop was to unify approaches to mathematics content presented in textbooks aimed at teacher education, in addition to discussing sustainable models of longitudinal professional development that have been successfully implemented in Australia, Europe, Israel and North America. In this special issue of The Mathematics Enthusiast, the myriad approaches to mathematics teacher professional development are presented and discussed. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Northern Kentucky University's College of Education's faculty realizes that the infusion of technology into the teacher education program is important. Support for the infusion of technology was ...evident when the faculty adopted the ISTE Recommended Foundations for Teachers and a five-year technology plan in 1998. Interviews with the faculty during the 1999-2000 academic year identified three primary barriers for infusion of technology into the curriculum: (a) access to technology, (b) training on how to use the technology, and (c) time to redesign curriculum. If increased access to technology is provided to higher education faculty, how should the training and time issues be addressed?
