The demand for environmentally friendly materials is at its peak, and government legislations have become stricter and no longer tolerate violations. With biocomposites emerging as structural ...components instead of being hidden as non-structural applications and interiors, the automotive and motorsport sector started considering them for structural body parts. Natural fibres abundance, commercial availability, renewability, low density, low cost, and high tensile strength make biocomposite materials excellent candidates for eco-friendly vehicles. Several studies reported the utilisation of biocomposites as high-performance components and structural applications. However, current computer-aided engineering and modelling tools are insufficient to explore the vast field of possibilities during biocomposite materials selection to accurately predict the components' behaviour and analyses. Therefore, this study focuses on creating a material model to predict the behaviour of biocomposite materials. Additionally, the model is numerically implemented to illustrate the deformation and bending stiffness capabilities of a motorsport monocoque chassis structure application. A micromechanics modelling combining rate-dependant constitutive laws and multi-site interactions of inclusions is developed for studying the nonlinear response of composite materials. To avoid numerical instabilities when increments of time become very small, a regulation procedure concerning the visco-plastic function is adopted in the computation of the consistent tangent modulus. Based on the Generalised Mori–Tanaka (GMT) scheme, the effective properties are obtained for the nonlinear composite. The accuracy of the model is evaluated and validated by comparison results from the open literature. Finally, the developed constitutive equations are implemented as a user-defined material UMAT in a Finite Element code, leading to an application on a bio-based composite for the bamboo/flax fibre-reinforced epoxy hybrid composite materials.

Formula 1 racing, known for its speed and innovation, faces an increasingly urgent need to address environmental concerns. This study investigates the environmental impacts of various fuel types used ...in Formula 1, aiming to bridge a critical gap in the automotive industry's perception of sustainability. With sustainability at the forefront, we conducted a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of different fuel types, including Gasoline, E5, E10, and E85, specifically analyzing their effects during the Belgian Grand Prix race. Through a thorough literature review and careful scoping, we sought to provide valuable insights into the environmental performance of these fuels in the context of high-performance racing. Our findings reveal a stark contrast between marketed sustainability claims and actual environmental impacts. Contrary to expectations, our analysis demonstrates that E85, often advertised as a sustainable alternative, exhibits the highest emissions across various environmental indicators. Specifically, E85 showed the highest impacts on water consumption, fine particulate matter, ozone formation, and human health. These results carry profound implications for the automotive industry, highlighting the importance of informed decision-making in fuel selection within the racing industry. By prompting further discussions on sustainable practices in motorsports, our study urges stakeholders to reevaluate fuel choices and embrace environmentally responsible alternatives.
In the last few years, utilizing fiber reinforced additive manufacturing (FRAM)-based components in several industries has become quite popular. Compared to conventional AM technologies, FRAM offered ...complementary solutions to their needs. In general, fibers have been traditionally used in many manufacturing processes for various reasons. However, using conventional methods, there are obstacles in obtaining the desired complex geometries and low setup costs. AM offers possible avoidance of these limitations. Shape complexity, infill density, and manufacturing lead times are no longer barriers. Bridging AM with fiber reinforced materials offers a vast opportunity for lightweight and strong parts. Depending on the affinity, fibers with different structures can be mixed with different matrix materials and, thus, create stronger parts with improved mechanical properties. Process parameters like raster angle, infill speed, layer thickness, and nozzle temperature also strongly impact physical properties of FRAM products and are considered carefully. FRAM-based components are used in many industries such as aerospace, motorsports, and biomedicine, where the weight, strength, and complexity of parts are critical. Hence, numerous industrial companies and research facilities are investigating the implementation and adaptation of FRAM to their requirements. Studies are generally conducted on new materials, new FRAM technologies, the effect of fiber orientations and fraction on the performance of parts, improving the printing parameters, and other subjects. This study reports the current trends and challenges that FRAM is bringing to AM ecosystem.
Race car drivers are often hypohydrated during a race. The FluidLogic drink system is a hands-free, prompted drinking system that is hypothesized to increase the likeliness of drivers' consuming ...fluids and thereby mitigating hypohydration. To test the hypothesis, 20 elite professional race car drivers participated in a 2-day cross-over study in which they drove on a race simulator in an environmental chamber that was heated to regulation cockpit temperature (38°C). Drivers used either the FluidLogic drink system or a standard in-car water bottle system (Control) on one of each testing day. The results indicated that there was consistent fluid consumption with the FluidLogic system, while the Control condition elicited fluid consumption in bolus doses. The Control condition was associated with moderate (0.5%) increased core body temperature (P < 0.05) and substantial (3.3%) increased urine-specific gravity (P < 0.001) as compared to the FluidLogic condition. Driving performance metrics indicated that lap times during the Control Condition were 5.1 ± 1.4 (4.1%) seconds slower (P < 0.05) than the FluidLogic Condition, due to driving errors that occurred in the high-speed corners. Based on these results, prompted hands-free drinking can mitigate hypohydration and performance loss in automobile racing drivers.
