The text of the medieval Georgian panegyric poem “Tamariani” has come to us in the form of manuscripts of the 18th and 19th centuries. “Tamariani” mainly uses a poetic form, which is known in ...Georgian versification as “Chakhrukhauli”. “Chakhrukhauli” is a quatrain with twenty-syllable lines, the pre-caesural parts of which consist of two rhymed (often homonymous) syntagms. The lines also have an end rhyme. In Georgian literary criticism, until now, only evaluative points of view have been expressed regarding this work, and the functional nature of the formal techniques has been ignored. This article is an attempt to substantiate the hypothesis that the use of specific formal techniques – in particular, frequently repeated precaesural (including homonymous) rhymes in “Tamariani” – was due to the influence of Neoplatonic philosophy on the author. This hypothesis is also supported by the fact that Georgian researchers also noted the influence of Neoplatonic philosophy on “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”, the author of which was Chakhrukhadze’s contemporary, the greatest Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, although, unlike “Tamariani”, the influence of Neoplatonic philosophy was reflected on Rustaveli work’s content and philosophical concept, while in Chakhrukhadze’s poem the influence of Neoplatonism becomes clear upon a careful “reading” of the form of the work.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes a polemic of Italian Humanism around Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). In that period, intellectuals such as Cristoforo Landino (1424-1498) and Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) ...interpreted Dante’s writing through the platonic prism of the Phaedrus, that is, as someone who was granted the grace to contemplate the divine and the power to describe it. Decades earlier, however, Coluccio Salutati (1331-1406) and Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444) had already attributed to Dante the merit of focusing on formal studies and, with that, being able to develop expressive artifices to his poetry on its own. For the analysis of the different readings, excerpts in which Dante gives evidence of his path and intellectual maturity will be observed, as well as those in which it is possible to observe the poet’s role in the dissemination of formal knowledge in line with his ethical values.
RESUMO Este artigo analisa uma polêmica do Humanismo italiano envolvendo Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Naquele período, intelectuais como Cristóforo Landino (1424-1498) e Marsílio Ficino (1433-1499) interpretavam a escrita de Dante pelo prisma platônico do Fedro, isto é, como alguém a quem foram concedidos a graça de contemplar o divino e o poder de retratá-lo. Décadas antes, no entanto, Coluccio Salutati (1331-1406) e Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444) já haviam atribuído a Dante o mérito de ter se debruçado sobre os estudos formais e, com isso, ter sido capaz de desenvolver artifícios expressivos à sua poesia por conta própria. Para a análise das diferentes leituras, serão observados trechos em que Dante dá indícios de seu percurso e amadurecimento intelectual, assim como aqueles em que é possível observar a atuação do poeta na difusão do conhecimento formal em consonância com seus valores éticos.
Beginning with the work of Marsilio Ficino through the poems of Michele Marullo, Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola, Pierre Ronsard, Edmund Spenser and others, this essay discusses the revival and ...fortune of philosophical hymns in Quattrocento Italy and the diffusion of this genre in Early Modern Europe. In doing so, we will attempt at framing this phenomenon in the context of Early Modern religious pluralism and interpret it as an instance of experiential knowledge.

En este artículo me propongo mostrar que el Péri Archôn de Damascio representa, más allá de las intenciones del autor, la implosión de la metafísica neoplatónica y, al mismo tiempo, el intento más ...riguroso pero también más desgarrador por mantenerla a flote y asegurar la fundamentación ordenada de la realidad. En este sentido, toda la obra está animada por un doble movimiento: por un lado, la postulación de un Absoluto incoordinado (lo Inefable); por el otro, la postulación en última instancia de algún tipo de coordinación con el Todo. Sostendré, valiéndome de una comparación con algunas tesis de E. Lévinas, que el peligro que ha entrevisto Damascio, con una conciencia mucho más acentuada que sus predecesores, es que la postulación de lo Inefable, en tanto absolutamente incoordinado e irrelativo, conduce a la desfundamentación radical del Ser. Ante este peligro, Damascio se ha visto obligado a retroceder y a relativizar de algún modo a lo Inefable.

The breadth of its vision surpasses every other known ...commentary on the Elements of Theology, for it seeks to present a coherent account of the Platonic tradition as such (unified through the concord of Proclus and Dionysius) and at the same time to consolidate and transform a legacy of metaphysics developed in the German-speaking lands by Peripatetic authors (like Albert the Great, Ulrich of Strassburg, and Dietrich of Freiberg). The late Platonist philosopher Damascius both resumed and rejuvenated the long Greek thinking about time. In distinguishing between different takes on time, he offered novel perspectives, which can ...be seen as anticipating modern and contemporary theories about time. The greatest merit of his philosophy of time, however, is his deep reflection on what it is for a living being to have its being in becoming and how this relates to temporality.
This is a study of the Qurʾanic revelation theology of al-Muʾayyad fī l-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (d. 470/1078), the highest-ranking Fatimid dāʿī and Ismaili philosophical theologian of his era. Al-Muʾayyad's ...theory of Qurʾanic revelation features the following distinctive elements: (1) he distinguishes three levels of God's speech to challenge the views of Sunnī kalām; (2) he reinterprets the popular belief of the Qurʾān's pre-existence in the Guarded Tablet through Ismaili Neoplatonic thought to posit the Universal Intellect and Universal Soul as Revelatory Principles; (3) he argues for the nonverbal and spiritual nature of divine inspiration (waḥy) granted to the Prophets and situates the Prophet Muhammad as the actual composer of the words of the Qurʾān; (4) he defends the literary inimitability of the Arabic Qurʾān while denying the existence of miracles in the physical world; (5) he posits two earthly manifestations of Qurʾanic revelation - the Silent Scripture (the Qurʾān as a recited text) and the Speaking Scripture (the Imam of the time); (6) he situates Ismaili Qurʾanic hermeneutics known as taʾwīl as a revelatory exegesis that decodes the symbolic meaning behind the Qurʾān and facilitates the spiritual reintegration of the believer's soul to the celestial words of God in the spiritual world.
Machiavelli, like other Renaissance authors, weaved philosophy into works of fiction, attacking the notion attributed to Plato’s Diotima that love (eros) is philosophy’s partner. Under veiled ...criticism, presented in four comic texts bound together by the theme of love, Machiavelli delivers his criticism of Diotima’s eros. He joins a long line of astute manipulators, like Numa and Savonarola, who presented difficult ideas to people unlikely to accept them except under cover of divine authority. My essay rests on the expanding body of scholarship on Machiavelli’s neglected literary works.
