The development of lasers capable of producing high-intensity pulses has opened a new area in the study of light-matter interactions. The corresponding laser fields are strong enough to compete with ...the Coulomb forces in controlling the dynamics of atomic systems and give rise to multiphoton processes. This book presents a unified account of this rapidly developing field of physics. The first part describes the fundamental phenomena occurring in intense laser-atom interactions and gives the basic theoretical framework to analyze them. The second part contains a detailed discussion of Floquet theory, the numerical integration of the wave equations and approximation methods for the low- and high-frequency regimes. In the third part, the main multiphoton processes are discussed: multiphoton ionization, high harmonic and attosecond pulse generation, and laser-assisted electron-atom collisions. Aimed at graduate students in atomic, molecular and optical physics, the book will also interest researchers working on laser interactions with matter.
Fiber-optic communication systems have advanced dramatically over the last four decades, since the era of copper cables, resulting in low-cost and high-bandwidth transmission. Fiber optics is now the ...backbone of the internet and long-distance telecommunication. Without it we would not enjoy the benefits of high-speed internet, or low-rate international telephone calls. This book introduces the basic concepts of fiber-optic communication in a pedagogical way. The important mathematical results are derived by first principles rather than citing research articles. In addition, physical interpretations and real-world analogies are provided to help students grasp the fundamental concepts.Key Features:Lucid explanation of key topics such as fibers, lasers, and photodetectors.Includes recent developments such as coherent communication and digital signal processing.Comprehensive treatment of fiber nonlinear transmission.Worked examples, exercises, and answers.Accompanying website with PowerPoint slides and numerical experiments in MATLAB.Intended primarily for senior undergraduates and graduates studying fiber-optic communications, the book is also suitable as a professional resource for researchers working in the field of fiber-optic communications.
THE EFFECT OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING AND CRITICAL THINKING ON HIGH ORDER THINGKING ABILITY AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of problem-based learning model and critical ...thinking skills on students' high-order thinking about optical materials. Quasi-experimental method with two-way ANOVA design was used to conduct this study with 34 second semester physic education students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak. Data of students’ higher order thinking ability was obtained from multiple choice test with reason while the data of students' critical thinking ability was measured using multiple choice test. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) there is an influence of the problem based learning model on high student's thinking ability, (2) there is an influence of high critical thinking ability and low critical thinking ability on high student's thinking ability and (3) the interaction between the application of problem based learning model with the ability to think critically to the students' high level of thinking ability.

This book opens a new avenue to an engendering field of applied physics, located at the "crossing" of modern photonics, electromagnetics, acoustics and material science. It also highlights the ...concept of "non-locality", which proves to be not a special feature of quantum phenomena, but is shown to have an important counterpart in classical physics and its engineering applications too. Furthermore, it visualizes the physical results by means of simple analytical presentations, reduced sometimes to the elementary functions.Contents:IntroductionNon-local Dispersion of Heterogeneous DielectricsGradient Photonic Barriers: Generalizations of the Fundamental ModelResonant Tunneling of Light Through Gradient Dielectric NanobarriersInteraction of Electromagnetic Waves with Continuously Structured DielectricsPolarization Phenomena in Gradient NanophotonicsGradient Optics of Guided and Surface Electromagnetic WavesNon-local Acoustic Dispersion of Gradient Solid LayersShear Acoustic Waves in Gradient Elastic SolidsShear Horizontal Surface Acoustic Waves on Graded Index MediaReadership: For researchers, engineers and designers of communication systems, lecturers and graduate students.
