The second version of The Armed Robotic Control for Training in Civilian Law Enforcement, or ARCTiC LawE is presented in this paper. The ARCTiC LawE is an upper body exoskeleton designed to assist in ...training civilians, military, and law enforcement personnel. This second iteration tests the effect of locking out wrist flexion and extension for handgun training in addition to locking out the radial and ulnar deviation from the first version of The ARCTiC LawE. The experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group at 21 feet and 45 feet over a two-week period. The training occurred in week one and testing occurred in week two. This study lays the groundwork for continued research on transfer of training effectiveness with the ARCTiC LawE.
This paper presents the first version of the ARCTiC LawE, short for the Armed Robotic Control for Training in Civilian Law Enforcement. The ARCTiC LawE is an upper body exoskeleton designed to assist ...in training civilians, military, and law enforcement personnel. The first iteration of this exoskeleton tests the effect of locking out radial and ulnar deviation for handgun training. The project trained and tested subjects with little to no handgun training/experience utilizing the ARCTiC LawE. An analysis of accuracy and precision was conducted with 24 participants. The experimental group scored statistically significantly higher than the control group at 21 feet and at 45 feet. Most police altercations with handguns occur at 10 feet or less. The results imply the ARCTiC LawE version one has enough statistical support for a second iteration to address some of the quantitative and qualitative results.
The development of armour is as old as the dawn of civilization. Early man looked to natural structures to harvest or replicate for protection, leaning on millennia of evolutionary developments in ...natural protection. Since the advent of more modern weaponry, Armor development has seemingly been driven more by materials research than bio-inspiration. However, parallels can still be drawn between modern bullet-protective armours and natural defensive structures. Soft armour for handgun and fragmentation threats can be likened to mammalian skin, and similarly, hard armour can be compared with exoskeletons and turtle shells. Via bio-inspiration, it may be possible to develop structures previously un-researched for ballistic protection. This review will cover current modern ballistic protective structures focusing on energy dissipation and absorption methods, and their natural analogues. As all armour is a compromise between weight, flexibility and protection, the imbricated structure of scaled skin will be presented as a better balance between these factors.
Recent advances in microelectronics and materials should allow the development of integrated sensors with transduction properties compatible with being printed directly onto a 3D substrate, ...especially metallic and polymer substrates. Inorganic and organic electronic materials in microstructured and nanostructured forms, intimately integrated in ink, offer particularly attractive characteristics, with realistic pathways to sophisticated embodiments. Here, we report on these strategies and demonstrate the potential of 3D-printed microelectronics based on a structural health monitoring (SHM) application for the precision weapon systems. We show that our printed sensors can be employed in non-invasive, high-fidelity and continuous strain monitoring of handguns, making it possible to implement printed sensors on a 3D substrate in either SHM or remote diagnostics. We propose routes to commercialization and novel device opportunities and highlight the remaining challenges for research.
Empirical analysis of the contexts in which UDs occur in law enforcement have only recently begun to emerge. We analyzed a novel sample of UD reports (N = 171) that occurred between 1992 and 2016, ...collected from one non-U.S. and three U.S. law enforcement entities. Using an established antecedent-behavior-consequence (A-B-C) taxonomy, reports were analyzed by context, officer behavior, type of firearm, injuries, deaths, and property damages. This study is the first to empirically document reports of UDs caused by the startle response and the first to analyze a substantial sample of UDs that involved handguns with a double-action only trigger mechanism. An expanded analysis of UD consequences suggested that deaths and injuries might be more prevalent than previously reported.

Since 2001, there have been 10 documented instances of TASER/handgun weapon-confusion shootings by police. In each of these cases, the TASERs were carried in a configuration that facilitated being ...drawn with the dominant (strong) hand. One police human factors expert has attributed the unintentional shootings to slip errors and capture errors. While some laypersons have disputed this – usually without any proof of alternative theories – very little literature analyzing these shootings in light of prevalent human error theory exists. This paper applies current slip-and-capture theory to the facts of a highly publicized and well-documented case, concluding that this police TASER-confusion shooting falls within those theoretical frameworks. The need for further research and the criminalization of such errors is briefly discussed.

A flintlock musket and a brass case with two nails attached, were retrieved from the Akko 1 shipwreck, dated to the early 19th century, and studied using metallurgical analysis. Both artefacts were covered with encrustation and concretion. The iron musket barrel and the iron nails did not survive; only corrosion products and oxides were left of them. The brass case, the brass musket ramrod pipe, and the wood texture were well preserved. In both artefacts the iron was sacrificed to protect the brass. This information may assist in future conservation of similar objects.
In forensic investigation of firearm-related cases, determination of the residual amount of volatile compounds remaining inside a cartridge could be useful in estimating the time since its discharge. ...Published approaches are based on following the decrease of selected target compounds as a function of time by using solid phase micro-extraction (SPME). Naphthalene as well as an unidentified decomposition product of nitrocellulose (referred to as “TEA2”) are usually employed for this purpose. However, reliability can be brought into question given their high volatility and low reproducibility of the extracted procedure. In order to identify alternatives and therefore develop improved dating methods, an extensive study on the composition and variability of volatile residues in nine different types of cartridges was carried out. Analysis was performed using headspace sorptive extraction (HSSE), which is a more exhaustive technique compared to SPME. One hundred sixty six compounds were identified (several of which for the first time), and it was observed that the final compositional characteristics of each residue were strongly dependent on its source. Variability of single identified compounds within and between different types of cartridge as well as their evolution over time were also studied. Many explosion products containing up to four aromatic rings were found to be globally present in high proportions. Twenty-seven of them (excluding naphthalene) also presented detectable decreases during the first 24 h. Therefore, they could be used as complementary target analytes in future dating methods.
