The aim of this paper is to identify the dominant discourses of health and wellbeing that are offered in health education in Swedish schools. Issues of health and wellbeing are covered mainly in four ...school subjects in Sweden: physical education and health, home and consumer studies, biology, and social studies, and therefore, we interviewed teachers from those subjects to generate data. Six interrelated health discourses were identified from the data. All discourses were, however, also embedded within a health discourse with a comprehensive description of health as physical, psychological and social wellbeing. Results suggest that schools offer a Western and White discourse of health and that some content is overemphasised, and some is missing in relation to other non-dominant discourses of health and wellbeing.
This article introduces the Special Issue on pragmatic marker (PM) combinations. While research on pragmatic markers, or discourse markers, is a well-established area in pragmatics, investigating ...their combinatory behavior is a relatively recent trend. The article argues that research on PM combinations involves two main perspectives, namely the question of PM co-occurrence and the question of PM ordering. Addressing the first question means to analyze which PMs co-occur and which do not and to explore the motivations for co-occurrence. The second question investigates the regularities in ordering PMs that occur in combination and explores possible explanations for these regularities. The papers collected in this special issue address both of these questions in a diverse selection of languages and in the left and right utterance periphery. This introductory essay discusses the individual articles, summarizes the main findings of the Special Issue as a whole, and points to avenues for future research.
•This essay introduces the articles included in the Journal of Pragmatics Special Issue on ‘Pragmatic marker combinations’.•Prior research is introduced with a focus on the dimensions PM co-occurrence and PM ordering.•The article summarizes current questions in research on PM combinations and points to avenues for future research.
This article accounts for a case of pragmatic borrowing in a weak or casual language contact situation where English is a foreign language for the recipient language community, Spanish. The study ...describes and analyzes representative and specific examples of one English pragmatic discourse phraseological marker, namely, oh wait, in a sample of spontaneous synchronic comments made by football followers in Spanish football chats. The main purpose is to gain new insights into the use and distribution of oh wait in Spanish by focusing on its spelling variations, distribution, semantic and mainly pragmatic meanings and functions. The analysis shows that chat participants consciously resort to this foreign pragmatic marker as an ironic device with multiple simultaneous functions which affect the four levels of chat conversations, namely, the interaction or conversation itself, the previous statement or utterance, the other participants or interlocutors, and the user, participant or writer him/herself.
•Oh wait: a borrowed ironic pragmatic marker frequent in Spanish football chats.•How and why this English marker is incorporated into Spanish football comments.•Semantic and functional adaptability in Spanish: narrowing and broadening.•Oh wait multifunctionality operates at four different levels of discourse.•Different native and non-native (imperfect) uses of oh wait.
Abstract
The sentence-final adjunct WHAT has been given much attention for the past few years, mostly on its why-like interpretation and negative force. In this study, evidence will be provided to ...show that what otherwise seems to be exceptional cases, in effect, constitutes an independent construction, the refutatory WHAT construction. Although such a construction yields a strong negative force, it has the force dwell upon the interlocutor’s attitude or commitment. It is used to refute his/her previous claim in a conversation and can tolerate any utterance form. This is in sharp contrast to the why-like WHAT which is typically used to forbid actions and is restricted to action verbs. As will be revealed later, in syntax, the refutatory WHAT has to employ a component above CP, which not only helps explain the speaker’s refutatory force, but also directs our attention to a new ascending perspective zoned for both the speaker and the hearer/addressee.
This new landmark series provides a comprehensive overview of the entire field of pragmatics. It is based on a wide conception of pragmatics as the study of intentional human interaction in social ...and cultural contexts. In-depth articles discuss the foundations, major theories and most recent developments of pragmatics including philosophical, sociocultural and cognitive as well as methodological, contrastive and diachronic perspectives.
