This exploratory study aimed to gain an insight into the relationship between the work and health of teachers and monitors in a public nursery in Vitória da Conquista in the State of Bahia, Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten teachers and monitors. A content analysis of the interview transcripts identified four main themes: precarious work, overwork, and work intensification; management, politics, and conflicts; differences between the work of teachers and monitors; and education, health, and care. We conclude that, to promote change, the relationship between work and health should be discussed from the workers’ perspective to reinforce cooperation and expand the field of collective creation.
We aimed to explore pre-school teachers' understanding of socio-emotional development in early childhood and the role it plays in school readiness. Informants were 12 pre-school teachers from Cape ...Town, South Africa (coloured/mixed race = 12). The teachers completed semi-structured interviews on their understanding of socio-emotional development, the role that they think socio-emotional development plays in preparing the child for school, and what social and emotional skills are essential for school readiness. A thematic analysis of the data suggested that the teachers' perceive socio-emotional development among pre-school children to be characterised by the children's inter- and intrapersonal skills such as the expression of emotion, communication skills, problem solving, and sharing. The teachers also perceived the children's learning, social experiences, and learning environment adaptation competencies as important indicators of their socio-emotional development.
The aim of this study was to discover and describe parents', pre-school teachers', and other professionals' experiences of cooperation regarding children in need of special support. It is a topic ...that arouses many different feelings and experiences. This study has a qualitative procedure with a phenomenological approach. The data collection in this study consists of interviews from 20 participants. It becomes apparent that pre-school teachers lack training in cooperation, as well as that further education has not been available to any mentionable extent. In this study it becomes clear that there is a large difference between various pre-schools regarding knowledge and motivation to provide the extra support that many children need. This study also shows that accessibility to and information from other professionals to parents is basic for them to feel safety and support. Different aspects of cooperation are highlighted and discussed.
The aim of this study was to determine knowledge and practices of pre-school teachers on growth monitoring. A quasi-experimental, one-group pre-and post-test intervention study was conducted in eight ...conveniently selected government subsidized pre-schools in Vhembe and Mopani districts of Limpopo Province, South Africa. Fifteen pre-school teachers participated in the study. An intervention in a form of nutrition education lessons on growth monitoring was developed and implemented. Preschool teachers completed a knowledge test questionnaire prior to the lessons. The intervention also included the following training skills: procedure to take anthropometric measurements and plotting the Road to Health Chart. About 67% teachers understood the importance of growth monitoring at baseline. The results also showed an improvement 6 months after intervention. All (100%) teachers knew that growth monitoring can be used for diagnosing undernutrition. The results also showed an improvement in skills, such as the procedure to take anthropometric measurements. Knowledge and practices of teachers on growth monitoring were improved by nutrition education 6 months after intervention.
– The purpose of this study was to assess the awareness of pre‐school teachers concerning the management of traumatized teeth. A questionnaire survey of teachers’ backgrounds, attitudes/practices and ...knowledge was distributed to all teachers who attended a dental education program organized by the Singapore Dental Health Foundation. Of a total of 291 teachers surveyed, 29% had received tertiary education, while the rest (71%) had received secondary education. The mean teaching experience was 6.8±6.9 years. About a quarter had previous experience in handling dental trauma. Sixty‐three percent admitted having no knowledge of dental trauma; 79% were unsatisfied with their level of knowledge in this area; 95% were keen to have further education in dental trauma; 65% thought dental trauma emergency should be dealt with as soon as possible. Concerning knowledge, during‐office hour emergency services were more familiar (84%) than after‐office hour emergency services (15%), as was the concept of management of avulsed teeth (71%) compared to that of fractured teeth (51%). Knowledge about optimal storage media for avulsed permanent teeth was especially poor – being as low as 15%. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, it was found that teaching experience significantly influenced the respondents’ self‐assessed knowledge and their level of satisfaction with their knowledge (P=0.012). Teachers with more teaching experience had better knowledge about the replantation of permanent teeth (P=0.003). It is recommended that public education targeted at teachers should be carried out to increase dental trauma management awareness.
ABSTRACT
The paper documents a study conducted among 225 Palestinian pre‐school teachers from Israel. Data were collected through a self‐administered questionnaire that examined the teachers’ ...attitudes towards reporting child abuse and neglect. In general, the participants’ attitudes towards reporting child abuse and neglect to the child protection services (CPS) were more positive than their attitudes towards reporting to the police. Willingness to report suspected cases of child sexual abuse to the police and CPS was higher than willingness to report other types of child abuse and neglect. Inconsistent results were revealed with regard to how awareness of reporting regulations and awareness of signs and risk factors for child maltreatment affect willingness to report to CPS and to the police. A comprehensive discussion of the possible relevance of the participants’ socio‐cultural and sociopolitical values to their attitudes towards reporting child abuse and neglect is presented. The implications of the results for future studies are also discussed.
