This article presents and describes four case histories, which demonstrate that the role of geotechnical engineering in the preservation of architectural monuments in Mexico City is of paramount ...importance. Extremely soft soils and regional subsidence have combined to induce damaging differential settlements in a large number of monuments built in the former lake area. Hence, preservation of monuments in the city includes devising geotechnical solutions for correcting, reducing, or arresting differential settlements. The article points out the advantages and limitations of traditional solutions such as surface footings or the use of deep point bearing piles with devices for regulating the magnitude of loads applied on their heads. Other less well known solutions (underexcavation, mortar injection, and the use of isolation trenches) are also described and assessed critically.
For 60 years from 1926, the College of Medicine Building (COMB) was the centre of medical education in Singapore. The history of medical services and medical education is intimately intertwined, with ...the history of the COMB and the Tan Teck Guan Building. This article reviews the history of the 2 buildings.
▶ Austrian schools of economy and art history had consonant value theories. ▶ Riegl's concept of monument value is similar with current theories of cultural economics. ▶ Value of monument is ...fundamental for definition of the role and objectives of monument preservation.
The search of value that developed toward the end of the 19th century may be interpreted as peculiar to Austrian economists seeking to analyze and define the problem of value theory. Nevertheless, this interpretation leaves aside certain other significant disciplines where the idea and methods of the search of value were applied and came to fruition. One of the disciplines alluded to was art history. Alois Riegl, a prominent member of the Vienna School of Art History, created an original and fully applicable theory of monuments resulting from his thoughts on the question of cultural heritage preservation in Austria–Hungary. His theory of value is largely consonant with not only the value theory proposed by the Austrian economists, but also with the current theories of culture economics; in this respect, it is important to note that Riegl's theory could be interpreted similarly or identically within different disciplines of the Arts.
The preservation of historical monuments requires both a detailed understanding of water circulation inside construction materials, and a deep comprehension of the associated physical and chemical ...effects on building structure. Combining mass and temperature measurements may be a new powerful tool to achieve this purpose, as first results obtained on a wall of the Saint-Gatien cathedral in Tours, France, indicate. The proposed method has been evaluated with dedicated experiments in a climatic chamber, regulated in both temperature and humidity, using three types of stones: Tours tuffeau, Baumberg limy sandstone, and Rüthen sandstone. Climatic chamber data indicate that temperature gradients between rock surface and atmosphere provide a meaningful and practical estimate of the water flow, which controls the heat exchange between rock and atmosphere because of the high enthalpy of vaporisation of water. Continuous measurements of the mass of a sample confirm this assumption and allow the calibration of temperature data with respect to water flow estimations. Temperature gradients between points on the stone surface are also dominated by changes in the water flux, and they provide a sensitive estimate of local variations in the heat and water transport properties of non-saturated stones. Combined mass and temperature measurements therefore appear as a promising method to estimate in situ the global and local water flow between the rock and the atmosphere and thus to diagnose the state of stone degradation, or to estimate quantitatively the efficiency of treatment processes, both in the field and in the laboratory.

Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- EN Data contained in this record come from the following accademic activity (from which it is possible to locate additional records ...related with the Monastery):- ● LDGP_inv_002: "Intensive Program ERASMUS: TOPCART. Geometric Documentation of the Heritage (administrative and academic documentation)", http://hdl.handle.net/10810/9906- EN PDF file with the report (84 pages in Spanish) + appendixes with the cards with the stratigraphic units and plans.- EN This work starts with the observation that the Monastery of San Prudencio in Monte Laturce is slowly disappearing. Since it was abandoned the economic, political and social interest in him has declined, and the time has dented the Monastery becoming a ruin. Today the Monastery has lost its role as a religious center, but it still has a great importance connected with the information on history, culture, and ancient building that can still provide.- This research project has two lines. First, investigate the past of the Monastery using the conceptual tools of building archeology to develop an architectural study. Furthermore, using knowledge gained here to plan the future of the Monastery: currently there is more than a great ruin with a glorious past behind him but with little social impact, but this situation can change and the monastery will should convert into a catalyst for projects relating to all disciplines dealing with heritage and even beyond, in a development engine for the territory.- ES Los datos de este registro provienen de la una actividad académica que también aparece descrita en el repositorio y desde donde se puede acceder a otros trabajos relacionados con el Monasterio:- ● LDGP_inv_002: "Programa intensivo ERASMUS: TOPCART. All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
