Adrian Boas, an archaeologist with four decades' experience in the field, takes a fresh approach to investigating the experiences of crusaders, pilgrims, and settlers in the crusader states during ...the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Ostia, the ancient port of Rome, had a rich religious landscape. How processional rituals further contributed to this landscape, however, has seen little consideration. This is largely due to a lack ...of evidence that attests to the routes taken by processional rituals. The present study aims to address existing problems in studying processions by questioning what factors motivated processional movement routes. A novel computational approach that integrates GIS, urban network analysis, and agent-based modelling is introduced. This multi-layered approach is used to question how spectators served as attractors in the creation of a processional landscape using Ostia’s Campo della Magna Mater as a case study. The analysis of these results is subsequently used to gain new insight into how a greater processional landscape was created surrounding the sanctuary of the Magna Mater.
In recent years, major sporting and cultural events such as the Olympic Games have emerged as significant elements of public policy, particularly in efforts to achieve urban regeneration. As well as ...opportunities arising from new venues, these events are viewed as a way of stimulating investment, gaining civic engagement and publicizing progress to assist the urban regeneration process more generally. However, the pursuit of regeneration involving events is a practice that is poorly understood, controversial and risky.
Events and Urban Regeneration is the first book dedicated to the use of events in regeneration. It explores the relationship between events and regeneration by analyzing a range of cities and a range of sporting and cultural events projects. It considers various theoretical perspectives to provide insight into why major events are important to contemporary cites. It examines the different ways that events can assist regeneration, as well as problems and issues associated with this unconventional form of public policy. It identifies key issues faced by those tasked with using events to assist regeneration and suggests how practices could be improved in the future.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, the British Empire was plagued by sectarian violence. Much of this disorder was related to the activities of the Orange Order. Every July 12, ...Orangemen celebrated Protestant political dominance with processions, bonfires, and, frequently, riots. By the late 1820s, the violence reached a crescendo. In 1832, Parliament passed the Party Processions Act for Ireland, which prohibited armed assemblies and all gatherings in which participants carried inflammatory banners or other offensive symbols. In spite of the controversy surrounding the law's application, necessity, and enforcement, the Province of Canada followed suit in 1843. Although both Ireland and Canada saw increasingly violent Twelfth clashes during the 1840s, their responses to the annual challenge to public order diverged. This article compares this innovation in legislating public order in the context of the movement toward centralized control of law enforcement in the British transatlantic empire.
Reframing Pilgrimage argues that sacred travel is just one of the twenty-first century's many forms of cultural mobility. The contributors consider the meanings of pilgrimage in Christian, Mormon, ...Hindu, Islamic and Sufi traditions, as well as in secular contexts, and they create a new theory of pilgrimage as a form of voluntary displacement. In this essay, two different forms of debunking arguments are distinguished. On the type of debunking argument that I will promote, one attempts to undercut the justificatory status of a belief by ...showing that the belief was formed by an epistemically defective psychological process. I argue that there is a promising application of such a process debunking argument in metaethics. In normative ethics, however, process debunking arguments face greater obstacles.
Through a case-study of the World Youth Festival, the book provides new insights into the Soviet role in the cultural Cold War and offers an explanation why the USSR failed in the cultural battle ...against the USA and the capitalist system. With a detailed analysis of grass-roots interaction, it re-evaluates the agency of micro-level actors and argues that individuals had more chances for transnational contacts than previous scholarship has shown.

In this contribution the author goes deeper into the life, the oeuvre and the network of the all but forgotten artist Bramine Hubrecht (1855-1913). At the centre is one of her paintings – four veiled ...young girls entirely dressed in white in a church interior. This work is now in Museum Catharijneconvent. The painting was previously attributed to Isaac Israels (1865-1934) on the basis of two false signatures. New information has meant that it can now be identified as a work by the painter Bramine Hubrecht. One of her sketchbooks in the Rijksmuseum and a water-colour in the Pulchri Cabinet, a unique artists’ initiative in The Hague, helped in unravelling the story. These two works, which show exactly the same girls, can be attributed to Hubrecht with absolute certainty. New biographical information has reinforced this new attribution and also sheds light on the meaning of the subject. These ‘brides’ prove to be part of the Processione dei Misteri del Venerdì Santo, which is still held every year on the evening of Good Friday in Taormina, the little village in Sicily where Hubrecht lived at the beginning of the twentieth century. The new attribution has also prompted research into Hubrecht’s life and works – research which has not been carried out until now.
Building on theoretical frameworks and concepts from the so-called 'New Mobilities Paradigm', this paper investigates freestanding exedrae as stages of gathering in ancient Greek sanctuaries. In the ...Epidauros Asklepieion, one of the most important destinations of pilgrimage in the Greek world, 18 such exedrae were constructed from the fourth century BC onwards. Providing seating for small groups and adorned with honorific statuary, the exedrae were used for a variety of different gatherings and mobile situations, in some cases remaining in use across several hundred years, even by the same families. Concepts - including that of 'mobile situations' - developed by the urban theorist Ole B. Jensen shed light on the functions of the exedrae and the material footprint of gatherings in Greek sanctuaries more broadly.
