Public libraries in Finland have a strong history of cooperating and networking. Implementing SDGs and steering the action toward sustainability, however, has been so far carried out mainly out by ...individual libraries. A larger consensus or common guidelines are still missing, be it designing a new building, customer design thinking or rearranging internal workflows.
This is to be changed, hopefully serving as an example to readers´ communities. The report presented current cases and current best practices on initiatives and concentrated on finding a broader common ground on sustainability work. Helsinki City Library will act as a nationwide accelerator and common voice promoting the step marks toward greener libraries. A nationwide expert network and community of practice is to be established as well. As one example of the development, the tight cooperation between public libraries and basic education in Finnish society will be discussed. For historical reasons public libraries operate to a large extent as school libraries, so the task of supporting curriculum on sustainability topics is a major task for public libraries as well. What does the future of this collaboration and its possibilities look like?

Special Note: This article is part of a series of three scholarly pieces in this issue dedicated to Tamizdat Publications at the New York Public Library (NYPL):
(1) "What is Tamizdat?" by Yasha Klots
...(2) "Russian Tamizdat Publications at the New York Public Library: A Checklist," by Hee-Gwone Yoo
(3) "Russian Publishing Abroad: The New York Public Library Collections in the Longer View," by Bogdan Horbal
This checklist includes Russian tamizdat titles from the holdings of The New York Public Library. Manuscripts of these materials had been smuggled out of the Soviet Union and published in the West between 1929 and 1991. For the purposes of the checklist, the definition of the tamizdat was expanded to include titles in foreign languages, but limited to English translations only. The checklist excludes, however, Russian translations of works by foreign-language authors. The checklist is organized alphabetically by the name of the authors while the titles of their works appear in chronological order of their publication, regardless of the language in which they were first printed.
As an integral part of society, public libraries have been functioning as community centres that help enhance personal and professional skills development as part of an individual’s lifelong learning ...process. To that end, public libraries are sometimes regarded as the ‘people’s university’. Using a Shanghainese context, this study seeks to understand the effects of Shanghai Library in creating human capital for the local community. Through a quantitative questionnaire survey, this study focused on examining the perceptions and usage patterns of three different financially independent user groups – white-collar workers, executives/professionals and educators/cultural administrators – and, in particular, how Shanghai Library contributed to the lifelong learning of these three user groups. A total of 429 responses were collected for the study. The findings reveal that a majority of the respondents from all three user groups used Shanghai Library mainly for learning and studying, as well as enhancing job-related skills. In fact, the majority of the respondents regarded Shanghai Library as an ‘indispensable place’ for lifelong learning. This study offers a glimpse of how public libraries in China might build human capital for their local communities.
