Here, we consider a well-known wooden puzzle known as the impossible dovetail. We argue that an intriguing form of amodal completion, dealing with spontaneous interpretations of the inside of objects ...is the key to understanding why people find it difficult to see how the impossible dovetail is indeed possible.
Nursing students encounter various terms and concepts during their undergraduate education. Repeating and reinforcing these terms and concepts is challenging. Active learning strategies are ...recommended to enhance students' effectiveness, productivity and interest in the learning process in undergraduate education.
This study aims to investigate the effect of crossword puzzles on nursing students' learning success and knowledge retention of the concepts related to the pain management course.
The study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial.
The study was conducted in the nursing department of a state university in the southern region of Turkey.
The study involved 72 s-year nursing students who were enrolled in the Pain Management course.
Data were collected using a "Personal Information Form" and three different "Pain Management Knowledge Tests." While the control group received only the standard lecture technique as a traditional method, the experimental group was exposed to crossword puzzles as an active learning method for three lesson hours following the standard lecture technique. Research data were collected between November and December 2022 in the classroom. Descriptive statistics, the Independent Samples t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA test and Pearson's chi-squared test were employed for data analysis.
There was no significant difference between the pre-test and first post-test mean scores of both groups (p ˃ 0.05). However, the second post-test scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05).
The use of crossword puzzles positively affected nursing students' knowledge levels regarding concepts related to the pain management course.

What are (themed) cryptic crossnumber puzzles and where do they appear?
I'll start by answering the second question first, as that is the easier. This rather unusual genre of puzzle appears quarterly ...as part of the series of
Listener
crosswords, which found a new home in
The Times
newspaper following the demise of
The Listener
magazine in 1991. There is also a monthly on-line crossword magazine called
The Magpie
, which has a numerical puzzle in each issue. As a result, fans of crossnumber puzzles have sixteen a year to tackle. Themed cryptic crosswords appear much more frequently – perhaps ten times as often.
All
Listener
puzzles have a title and the setter is given a pseudonym. They are also numbered, and in what follows this reference is given in square brackets following the letter L. Puzzles from the
The Magpie
are referenced according to the issue of the magazine, using M.
Escape rooms have become a popular way to engage students in active learning and provide innovative ways to learn. This article provides an overview of escape room use and outcomes from the higher ...education literature and describes their use at a large US midwestern college of nursing nurse practitioner program. Recommendations regarding design, implementation and evaluation are reviewed, and a 10-step process is shared to summarize how faculty can develop their escape room.
•Escape rooms help nurse practitioner students practice clinical decision-making skills.•Escape rooms are innovative ways to engage students in learning.•Escape room popularity has grown in recent years.•Escape rooms can be designed for a variety of teaching goals.
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of the learning approaches on prospective chemistry teachers' self-regulated learning skills. 92 prospective chemistry teachers from the ...Department of Chemistry Education at one of the public university in Turkey participated in the research. “The Study Process Questionnaire” and “Self-regulated Learning Skills Scale” were used as the data collection tools. It was consequently found that 59.8 % of prospective chemistry teachers adopted deep learning approach, 40.2% of them adopted surface learning approach and their self-regulated learning skills scale scores for planning and goal setting scores differed significantly according to their learning approaches. Furthermore, it was determined that self-regulated learning skills mean score of prospective teachers' who adopted deep approach are higher than mean score of prospective teachers' who adopted surface approach but their self-regulated learning skills total scores did not differ significantly according to their learning approaches.
Morally supererogatory acts are those that go above and beyond the call of duty. More specifically: they are acts that, on any individual occasion, are good to do and also both permissible to do and ...permissible to refrain from doing. We challenge the way in which discussions of supererogation typically consider our choices and actions in isolation. Instead we consider sequences of supererogatory acts and omissions and show that some such sequences are themselves problematic. This gives rise to the following puzzle: what problem can we have with a sequences of actions if each individual act or omission is itself permissible? In this paper, we develop a response to this question, by exploring whether solutions analogous to those proposed in the rational choice literature are available in the case of supererogatory sequences. Our investigation leads us to the view that making sense of the supererogatory requires accepting that there are global moral norms that apply to sequences of acts alongside the local moral norms that apply to individual acts.
In recent years, the role of emotions in digital games has gained prominence. Studies confirm emotions’ substantial impact on gaming, influencing interactions, effectiveness, efficiency, and ...satisfaction. Combining gaming dynamics, Virtual Reality (VR) and the immersive Escape Room genre offers a potent avenue through which to evoke emotions and create a captivating player experience. The primary objective of this study is to explore VR game design specifically for the elicitation of emotions, in combination with the Escape Room genre. We also seek to understand how players perceive and respond to emotional stimuli within the game. Our study involved two distinct groups of participants: Nursing and Games. We employed a questionnaire to collect data on emotions experienced by participants, the game elements triggering these emotions, and their overall user experience. This study demonstrates the potential of VR technology and the Escape Room genre as a powerful means of eliciting emotions in players. “Escape VR: The Guilt” serves as a successful example of how immersive VR gaming can evoke emotions and captivate players.
Economic complexity highlights the relationship between interdependence (a positional characteristic of elements belonging to a given network or structure) and connectivity (a functional ...characteristic of elements belonging to a given field of interaction). Positional interdependence (as the one between pieces in a jigsaw puzzle) is central to studies investigating the architecture of a complex system (Simon) while connectivity is central to the analysis of responsiveness patterns in social networks and strategic action fields. This paper discusses the fundamentals of a structural approach to economic and spatial complexity by highlighting the hierarchical arrangement of network elements as a distinctive feature of system identity. The positional distribution of network elements is a fundamental characteristic of complex networks and a central condition constraining the dynamics of those networks through the principle of
relative structural invariance
. The paper investigates the role of this principle by connecting it with the aggregation criterion followed in assigning network elements to specific subsystems. The type of aggregation is essential in determining the resilience properties of the network with respect to specific dynamic impulses. The paper concludes highlighting the need to combine the investigation of positional interdependence with the analysis of connectivity since positional interdependence is fundamental in determining which patterns of connection are more likely to arise (and which ones are excluded), due to the role of alternative properties of relative invariance constraining the feasible transformations in the positions of network elements.
