Book Chapter
In the pilot project visual and spoken word artists conducted three separate sessions of weekly workshops. Two of the four week sessions were all male, while the third was co-ed. In the Spoken Word ...workshops the artists challenged the youth to explore their feelings and use language as a means of self-expression. Much of the boys’ work focused on the loss of loved ones and the violence in Flint.
By contrast with the boys, who were more open to visual expression, the young women were more eager to write, and wrote extensively about personal issues, including sexual abuse. This led to the development of the gender-specific programming.
Public research organization has a different characteristic from university and is an important player for industry-academia collaboration. Its situation has been substantially changed recently ...because of the transformation into independent administrative institution, and it is required to promote unique strategy for the collaboration. By analyzing the joint research of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology as a case example, this study has revealed the tendency from the view point of location, partner, research unit and per researcher. 4 items are indicated as the problems for strengthening the collaboration, which are a) penetration into regions, b) enhancement of presence, c) collaboration methods suitable for various research units, and d) improvement of the quality of joint research. 3 items are proposed for the strategy, which are (1)cultivation of regions by utilizing regional centers as front-line bases, (2)comprehensive proposal activities based on an overall view of research and development reaching social needs, and (3)systematic outside fund acquisition and project management.
This study was carried out in three stages during 2009 through April 2011. The main objective of the study is to determine, on the basis of usage of qualitative data collection methods, impact of the ...economic crisis on the most vulnerable population groups, as well as to monitor dynamics of changes in the lives of the respondents by consistently comparing the results of each of the consecutive stages of the project study. The study evaluates the impact of Ukraine's economic crisis on employment, household incomes, consumer prices, migration, and emerging occurrences of fraud. The conclusion of this assessment updates and supplements general information on the impact of the crisis on different groups of urban and rural population, with special emphasis to be paid to most vulnerable groups, and to compare these estimates with those which were obtained in December 2009 and June 2001.
Deeper regional integration can be beneficial especially for regions along international borders. It can open up new markets on opposite sides of borders and give consumers wider access to cheaper ...goods. This paper uses data from five contiguous districts of India, Nepal, and Bangladesh in the northeast of the subcontinent to measure the degrees of trade complementarity between districts. The paper illustrates that the regions are underexploiting the potential of intraregional commerce. Price wedges of up to 90 percent in some important consumption products along with measures of complementarity between households' production and consumption suggest the potential for relatively large gains from deeper trade integration. Furthermore, an examination of a specific supply chain of tea highlights factors that help industries scale up, aided by institutions such as an organized auction and decent physical and legal infrastructure. However, districts alike in geography but located across international boundaries face different development prospects, suggesting that gains from reduced "thickness of borders" would not accrue automatically. Much rests on developing intrinsic industry competitiveness at home, including the reform of regulatory and business practices and infrastructural bottlenecks that prevent agglomeration of local economies.
In this paper, the author conducted a comparative study of the way in which expansion of lowuse or unused land affects the spatial structures of Matsuyama and Takamatsu cities, in order to clarify ...the mechanisms of "land disuse" in CBD of regional centers, and at the same time to seek out directions for reorganization of land use in the future. As a result of this study, we found that there has been a gradual formation of a urban structure exhibiting a bipolar decomposition in both cities, comprising i) a dense concentration of functions along major roadways, and ii) a shift toward land disuse in inner city blocks. Another characteristic common finding to both cities was a rapid transition in land use from low-use or unused land along major roadways, and a comparatively slow land use change in inner city blocks. Possible reasons for these trends are the decrease in low-use or unused land along major roadways, and the establishment of new small parking lots (or the expansion of existing parking lots) in inner city blocks. Furthermore, in Takamatsu city, unlike Matsuyama city, there is a slow transition in land use from low-use or unused land, and the increase in unoccupied buildings in particular is promoting a degeneration of urban areas. This trend is a significant factor in defining the urban structure in both cities. In Takamatsu city, the effective use of low-use or unused land, combined with reorganization of high intensive build area and a revitalization of industry, is an urgent issue.
