The first Croatian translation of Augsburg Confession was done in the year 1562 by Croatian protestants Stipan Konzul and Antun Dalmatin. They translated Primož Trubar's Slovenian redaction and ...published it in two editions: Glagolitic and Cyrillic. Since they did not have a model on which to lean while translating this work, it is interesting to see what kind of language they have chosen for those editions not very closely related to the altar (as e.g. New Testament), i.e. is there any difference between the language of their liturgical and nonliturgical editions or does their literary language concept remain the same. In this article syntactic functions of the present active participle and the perfect active participle I, excerpted from the Glagolitic edition of Artikuli, are being analyzed. Based on their usage, the article aims at determining which status Croatian protestants have allocated to these forms, which were previously considered as the key elements of the most prestigious variant of the Croatian literary language. Although the Croatian translation follows Trubar's edition very consistently, particularly interesting are numerous examples in which Croatian protestants introduced the participle in place of other Slovenian syntactic constructions.
This paper explores the linguistic landscape (LL) in the southern Austrian province of Carinthia, which is home to an autochthonous Slovene minority. Following several decades of political and legal ...debate known as the Ortstafelstreit ('dispute of topographic signs'), recent legislation has strengthened the status of Slovene by requiring municipalities with a considerable Slovene population to set up bilingual German-Slovene topographic signs marking their municipal boundaries. However, this is juxtaposed with a longstanding decline in use of the Slovene language amongst the autochthonous Slovene population. This qualitative analysis of the LL of three frames, the civic, the commercial and the church, shows a heterogeneous picture, but one that is generally strongly skewed towards monolingual German. It suggests that Slovene is assigned a comparatively low sociosymbolic value. This can be, at least in part, attributed to the selective manner in which municipalities are awarded legal bilingual status, leading to a lack of linguistic cohesion in the area and its LL. A marked exception to this is the church frame, whose LL is characterised by a relatively balanced use of both German and Slovene.
Communication through email represents one of the most important forms of business communication, not just within a company but also externally with customers. The paper examines email interactions ...between the agents representing a Slovenian transport company and its customers. More specifically, the study examines specific aspects and elements of email production in a Slovenian customer service setting. It is hoped that the findings will help enhance the communication skills of learners of Slovenian as a foreign language and students of translation and increase their cultural awareness and their knowledge of technology-mediated customer service communication. Moreover, the findings could increase students’ understanding of the pragmatic motivations behind interactants’ linguistic choices.
Autobiographical sources, fragments of memoirs and correspondences, and individual oral narratives, collected in the 1980s, enable a research of female Slovenian refugees from Gorizia and Soča ...region, who found themselves on both sides of the front, in Austrian and Italian context, during the First World War. Individual narratives, although succinct, highlight the centrality of women, mothers or older sisters, from their ability to use and complement state subsidies to becoming interlocutors for the authorities, depending on the place of the transfer. The war loosened social control over women, yet not all benefited from these new spaces of autonomy. The Slovenian intellectuals from Trieste and Gorizia, who during the war became public champions of the suffering of the displaced and refugees, especially of the plight of mothers-refugees, became refugees themselves after the war when the former Litoral region became part of Italy and fascism ascended.
The two different models of bilingual/multilingual education that have been developed in Slovenia since the 1950s in the regions of Prekmurje (minority language Hungarian) and Slovene Istria ...(Italian) are the result of international agreements, education and language policies, social and demographic factors. The basic aim in both cases is to help ensure the equal rights of the minority community, their language and their culture. In this paper, we shall present the historical and social background to the development of these two models, and describe the way in which language and education policies are applied in these two mixed areas. Drawing upon empirical research, we shall also consider how successful the models have been in achieving their stated goals. Finally, we shall present the results of research into attitudes and perceptions among parents and children toward multilingual and multicultural education in these two Slovene regions, using the collected data to compare the relative success of the two different models in the eyes of the local communities.
