Home Voice Assistants (HVAs) like the Amazon Echo or the Google Home are increasingly being used to control smart devices in a smarthome. A HVA device takes in a spoken command (“Turn off the ...living-room lights and television”), and converts it into commands for respective devices. This paper presents CANVAS system, an Context AwareNess for Voice ASsistants system designed for multi-occupant smarthomes. CANVAS is designed to be run on a HVA, and makes use of the sounds in the home to provide additional context information to decide whether to execute the command, prompt for confirmation, or reject the command entirely. CANVAS also includes a pictorial utility to help non-expert users configure these rules. Our experiments indicate that CANVAS has a low computational overhead, making it suitable to be executed in HVAs. Our experiments Mechanical Turk suggest that the pictorial configuration utility is also intuitive.
This research was motivated by a number of shortcomings in previous similar studies, mainly related to the selection of sensors, the selection of application for operation, and the absence of backup ...power in the system, so that manufacturing and development were carried out for the acquisition of an embedded device as a control unit. The availability of this control unit is part of the smart-home system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) for gateway controllers, via smartphones with a one-time password mechanism. The research objectives include (i) the manufacture of control units and programming based on Arduino IDE and (ii) verification and validation tests. The realization of the control unit is carried out through assembling a number of electronic devices, making motherboards, re-functionalizing of the miniature gates, and integrated wiring equipped with embedded programs. The performance of the control unit is measured by providing verification tests in the form of simulations based on the Proteus application and validation tests assisted by the Telegram Bot application when conditions are given to the gate when it is opened, closed, or the lock is in a lock/unlocked state. The performance of the control unit developed, in the form of increasing the speed of the gate opening and closing process, implementing one-time passwords for operating security, and the availability of internal backup power. Recommendations for further research, more emphasis is placed on the creation of various control units that are integrated into the smart-home system platform.

The interface, Francois Dagognet wrote, is a “fertile nexus.” Rather than an immaterial surface or an impartial gateway, the interface itself continually draws upon political, social and cultural ...sources, all which work to encourage particular productivities while suppressing or negating others. This article explores the specific properties of Amazon Alexa, the “digital assistant” for the home who plays music, delivers news, tells jokes, and plays games. Of course, Alexa interfaces with content — a deluge of diverse applications and information are smoothly brought together through her consistent voice and coherent personality. But Alexa also interfaces with history — she is part of a longer genealogy of gendered interfaces from Siri and Cortana all the way back to Bell Labs, a genealogy predicated on a subjectivity of subservience. Alexa also interfaces with capital — the “Skills” she can learn, and which the user must remember and repeat, are based on a landscape of corporate brands and commercial products. Finally, Alexa interfaces with culture — the predominantly white male culture of contemporary software production shapes the type of sexuality and subjectivity embodied by the bot. Following Alexander Galloway, the interface can thus be understood less as a mere palimpsest of previous traces, and more as a generative performance in the present. The runaway success of Alexa has established her as a universal mediator for the smart home and a model for the internet of things. As the prototype of a technical vision, Alexa’s performative interfacing — and the politics enacted through it — need critical examination.
Aktuell werden digitalisierte Küchengeräte als Lösung für die Unvereinbarkeit von Reproduktions- und Erwerbsarbeit mobilisiert, eine Herausforderung, die nach wie vor zum größten Teil Frauen zu ...bewältigen haben. Der Artikel fragt, inwiefern häusliche Technologien vergeschlechtlichte Reproduktionsarbeit verändern können und wie sich Mensch-Technik-Beziehungen in räumlichen Praktiken ausdrücken. Der Wohnraum mit den darin stattfindenden sozialen Praktiken wird dabei im Sinne Feministischer Stadtforschung und Feministischer Technikforschung als zentraler Aushandlungsort von Geschlechterverhältnissen und als Schauplatz von Technisierung betrachtet. Am Beispiel der zunehmend digitalisierten Küchenmaschine Thermomix bin ich in einer qualitativen Fallstudie der Frage nachgegangen, welche Bedeutung die Technologie für vergeschlechtlichte Praktiken im Haushalt hat. Mit Blick auf die räumliche Verortung der Küchentechnologie und symbolische Bezüge zu ihr wird deutlich, wie vergeschlechtlichte Mensch-Technik-Beziehungen Arbeit und Wohnen mitgestalten und so einerseits Geschlechterungleichheiten manifestieren und andererseits neue Sichtbarkeiten ermöglichen.
In recent years, the growing use of Intelligent Personal Agents in different human activities and in various domains led the corresponding research to focus on the design and development of agents ...that are not limited to interaction with humans and execution of simple tasks. The latest research efforts have introduced Intelligent Personal Agents that utilize Natural Language Understanding (NLU) modules and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in order to have complex dialogues with humans, execute complex plans of actions and effectively control smart devices. To this aim, this article introduces the second generation of the CERTH Intelligent Personal Agent (CIPA) which is based on the RASA framework and utilizes two machine learning models for NLU and dialogue flow classification. CIPA-Generation B provides a dialogue-story generator that is based on the idea of adjacency pairs and multiple intents, that are classifying complex sentences consisting of two users’ intents into two automatic operations. More importantly, the agent can form a plan of actions for implicit Demand-Response and execute it, based on the user’s request and by utilizing AI Planning methods. The introduced CIPA-Generation B has been deployed and tested in a real-world scenario at Centre’s of Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) nZEB SmartHome in two different domains, energy and health, for multiple intent recognition and dialogue handling. Furthermore, in the energy domain, a scenario that demonstrates how the agent solves an implicit Demand-Response problem has been applied and evaluated. An experimental study with 36 participants further illustrates the usefulness and acceptance of the developed conversational agent-based system.
Arrival prediction system on smarthome is system that cam estimating time of home owner arrival on smarthome. Prediction system used to reference on smarthome system to preparing electronic devices ...so at home owner arrive, the devices are already to use. Prediction system made by divide distance of home owner location to home by driving velocity. Prediction also use neural network perceptron to determine travel condition are in traffic or not and correcting to predicting perform. Perceptron use last travel data as reference correction to prediction system. Based on testing on prediction system, accuracy of prediction system reach 74% to 79%. Accuracy reach these values due errors occurred while determining location so predicted route became not match with real condition. Errors occured by GPS usage not on outdoor area and smartphone GPS only detect 6 GPS satellite. Neural network perceptron differ of traffic condition on travel after fourth epoch, with weight value at 11.09 and bias value at 61. And perceptron can correcting prediction system after twelfth epoch with weight values at -0.2778 and 0.2924 also bias value at -0.05.
This work proposes LiquidListener, a novel liquid volume sensing method for containers. Specifically, it enables the ubiquitous measurement of liquid volume not available in existing work due to i ) ...dependencies on dedicated sensing hardware (e.g., capacity sensors) and containers (e.g., transparent containers) and ii ) a high training intensity. A key enabler of LiquidListener is listening to singing sounds . When a user taps a container using solid objects, such as pens and teaspoons, the container vibrates freely and produces a singing sound. As the container is filled with more liquid, the pitch of the sound decreases. Based on this relationship, we develop acoustic-based liquid volume sensing algorithms that support the precise measurement of liquid volume while using only a smartphone and requiring minimal user effort for calibration. The extensive experiments demonstrate that LiquidListener can support high accuracy with an average error ratio of 2.3% in sensing the liquid volume in various containers. In addition, the experimental results indicate that it can still maintain a similar level of accuracy in diverse and dynamically changing environments, even without additional calibration.
Constructing a smart home is not a task without intricate challenges due to involvement of various tools and technologies. Therefore, this research work presents a concept of context-aware low power ...intelligent SmartHome (CLPiSmartHome). For CLPiSmartHome, we propose a communication model, which provides a common medium for communication, i.e., same communication language. Moreover, an architecture is also proposed that welcomes all the electronic devices to communicate with each other using a single platform service. The proposed architecture describes the application, analysis and visualization aspects of the CLPiSmartHome. Furthermore, the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed system are implemented on Hadoop single node setup on UBUNTU 14.04 LTS coreTMi5 machine with 3.2GHz processor and 4 GB memory. Sample medical sensory data sets and fire detection datasets are tested on the proposed system. Finally, the results show that the proposed system architecture efficiently processes, analyzes, and integrates different datasets and triggers actions to provide safety measurements for elderly age people, patients, and others.
The Internet of things has profoundly changed the way we imagine information science and architecture, and smart homes are an important part of this domain. Created a decade ago, the few existing ...prototypes use technologies of the day, forcing designers to create centralized and costly architectures that raise some issues concerning reliability, scalability, and ease of access which cannot be tolerated in the context of assistance. In this paper, we briefly introduce a new kind of architecture where the focus is placed on distribution. More specifically, we respond to the first issue we encountered by proposing a lightweight and portable messaging protocol. After running several tests, we observed a maximized bandwidth, whereby no packets were lost and good encryption was obtained. These results tend to prove that our innovation may be employed in a real context of distribution with small entities.
Smarthome merupakan salah satu implementasi konsep Internet of Things (IoT) yang memungkinkan untuk mengontrol dan memonitoring perangkat elektronik melalui jaringan internet. Pada penelitian ini ...dirancang sebuah sistem smarthome yang mendukung sinkronisasi pengontrolan hidup dan matinya perangkat elektronik melalui switch, aplikasi web dan time scheduling dengan database. Untuk mendukung sistem tersebut digunakan beberapa tools pendukung seperti Apache, MySQL, dan PHP serta hardware berupa arduino dan raspberry pi. Sementara itu, metode pemodelan agile dengan pendekatan scrum digunakan dalam perancangan sistem ini. Penelitian ini diimplementasikan dalam sebuah Sistem Informasi Manajemen Perangkat Elektronik berbasis web yang bernama SIMPEL. Aplikasi SIMPEL memberikan kemudahan dalam mengendalikan perangkat elektronik yang ada di rumah.
