The absence of epidermal trichomes has been used as a diagnostic character to distinguish Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum from other infraspecific taxa. In the Huizache region of San Luis Potosi, ...Mexico, between the elevations of 1320 m and 1700 m, the local populations of A. myriostigma are polymorphic, comprised of nude, semi-nude, and flecked plants. However, this polymorphism is non-discrete as there is considerable variation and intermediacy among plants. Also, the proportion of nude plants increases gradually with elevation, which suggests clinal variation correlated with altitude. Exclusively nude populations are currently known only from near Santa Rita del Rucio (≥ 1710 m) and south of Entronque Huizache (≥ 1750 m). Farther south, flecked plants were recorded at 1726 m elevation at 6 km E of Guadalcazar, and to the north near El Realejo flecked plants occur as high as 1920 m. At localities southeast of the Sierra San Pedro (Sierra Guadalcazar), nude and semi-nude plants are absent or present at relatively low frequencies in local populations.
Epidermal trichomes provide shading and reflectance that protects the cactus stem against excessive solar radiation and moderates stem temperature. The majority of nude A. myriostigma growing in exposed locations at the margins of Hechtia colonies were found to suffer from chlorophyll degeneration due to excessive exposure to solar radiation.
A comparative morphological study did not find any characters which can be used in combination to diagnose the var. nudum. Given the lack of a suite of discrete, or nearly discrete diagnostic characters, and given that exclusively nude populations do not have a definable geographic distribution we suggest that the nude phenotype should be treated taxonomically as a "form" rather than as a geographical "variety," or subspecies.
La ausencia de tricomas epidérmicos se ha utilizado como un carácter diagnóstico para distinguir Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum de otros taxa infraespecíficos. En la región Huizache de San Luis Potosí, México, entre las elevaciones de 1320 m y 1700 m, las poblaciones locales de A. myriostigma son polimórficas, compuestas por plantas desnudas, semidesnudas y moteadas. Sin embargo, este polimorfismo no es discreto ya que existe una considerable variación e intermediación entre las plantas. Además, la proporción de plantas desnudas aumenta gradualmente con la elevación, lo que sugiere una variación clinal correlacionada con la altitud. As part of ongoing efforts to understand, document, and conserve the flora of southeastern North America, we propose a number of taxonomic changes, nomenclatural changes, interpretations of nativity, ...and distributional accounts. Regarding the Asaroideae (Aristolochiaceae), we support continued recognition of Hexastylis (and other segregates of a very broad Asarum s.l.) at generic rank and make the necessary combinations to continue the use of Hexastylis in southeastern North America floras. In Conoclinium (Asteraceae), we present morphological and distributional evidence corroborating the recent suggestion (based on molecular evidence) that Chapman's 1878 C. dichotomum is distinct, warrants recognition, and is present as a second Conoclinium in the southeastern North American flora. An analysis of historical accounts of Gaillardia pulchella (Asteraceae) strongly suggests that its modern occurrence east of Texas is adventive, rather than native. Two rare southeastern United States skullcaps, Scutellaria mellichampii and S. ocmulgee (Lamiaceae), have been persistently confused with one another and other species; we present a reassessment of the taxonomic distinction between them, best ways to distinguish them and similar species, and their known distributions. A reassessment of the taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of Linum carteri (Linaceae), a rare southern Florida endemic, confirms that two species should be recognized by modern species concepts; we make the necessary new combination to effect the recognition of two narrowly endemic species. In Andropogon (Poaceae), we propose that A. virginicus var. decipiens warrants recognition as distinct at species rank from other entities in the Andropogon virginicus complex. We also present more comprehensive information on the distributions of four species of "bushy bluestems" (Andropogon glomeratus s.l.), their ecology, and their practical recognition. In the Violaceae, modern reassessment of the taxonomy of many species (especially in the genus Viola) by H.E. Ballard, Jr. and collaborators have been vexed by uncertain application of many "old" names; we here provide a first installment of typifications and nomenclatural interpretations needed to move forward with a modern treatment of the genus in our region. In Xyris (Xyridaceae), we re-establish the generally ignored X. elliottii var. stenotera based on careful and extensive study of its morphology and ecology in comparison to X. elliottii var. elliottii, including a transplant study. English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683–1749) has been honored by having a genus and fifteen species of plants named for him, but most of these honorific names have been cons tructed in manners contrary to the Shenzhen Code; as these are "errors to be corrected," we therefore propose to correct and standardize these honorifics by restoring his name "catesby-" as the root of the names. Similarly, in seven names (variably formed) employed by W.W Ashe to honor his cousin and (later) wife Margaret Haywood Henry (Wilcox) (Ashe), we also standardize and correct the root of the names to be accurately based on her name, "margaret-," in conformance with the Shenzhen Code.

As a part of ongoing systematic and phylogenetic studies in Polygalaceae, field collections of two pairs of North American species (Polygala balduinii and P. ramosa, and P. lutea and P. rugelii) had ...morphologically intermediate forms and grew sympatrically, and so were suspected to be interspecific hybrids. Although hybrids among plants are often invoked in taxonomic and floristic literature based on morphologic intermediacy, they are rarely documented and substantiated using molecular tools. We found that the morphologically intermediate individuals within intermixed populations of both species pairs did indeed share all of the variable nucleotide sites in nrITS among the parent species. Likewise, using plastid sequence data (trnL-F), we determined that in both species pairs, the parentage was bidirectional. Although some DNA inheritance phenomena (e.g., incomplete lineage sorting) can result in similar polymorphic DNA sequence data, the intermediacy in both morphology and sequence data within sympatric populations is more indicative of interspecific hybridization.

Two new species are here described as segregates from Heteranthera multiflora. Heteranthera missouriensis sp. nov. has 5–13 flowers on an elongate floral axis, lavender to purplish flowers, a smaller ...perianth with the tube 3–5 mm long and lobes 3–4.5 mm long; it is common in the southern Great Plains of North America. Heteranthera pauciflora sp. nov. has 3–6 flowers on a shortened floral axis, commonly enclosed by the subtending spathe, white to light lavender flowers with the tube 8–10 mm long; it is known from the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to North Carolina. A taxonomic key to all species of the genus in North America, and a modified description of Heteranthera multiflora, are provided.

The Wild Orchids of North America, North of Mexico (Brown & Folsom 2003) has served as an illustrated and annotated checklist of the orchids of that region. In the years since research was completed ...for that work, many new taxa have been described, as well as other pertinent facts published that required five corrections to the original manuscript. In Part I, those additions and corrections, including literature references and photographs, were presented to enable the reader to update this volume to the end of 2005. This current paper contains additions, emendations, and eight new combinations through March 2020.

Two new subspecies of fir dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium abietinum, Viscaceae) are described herein: Arceuthobium abietinum subsp. mathiasenii (Mathiasen's dwarf mistletoe) and Arceuthobium abietinum ...subsp. grandae (grand fir dwarf mistletoe). The former dwarf mistletoe—Mathiasen's dwarf mistletoe—parasitizes Rocky Mountain white fir in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and Durango fir in northern Mexico; whereas, grand fir dwarf mistletoe parasitizes grand fir as well grand fir × white fir hybrids in California, Oregon, and Washington. The recognition of these subspecies and, hence, their classification is based on morphological discontinuities and host range differences when compared to white fir dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium abietinum subsp. abietinum), red fir dwarf mistletoe (A. abietinum subsp. magnificae), and Wiens' dwarf mistletoe (A. abietinum subsp. wiensii). The combined analyses of plant height, third internode length and width, fruit dimensions, staminate spike and petal dimensions, and anther distance to tip, contributed most to the discrimination of subspp. grandae and mathiasenii from subspp. abietinum and magnificae. The flowers of Mathiasen's dwarf mistletoe were larger than all of the other taxa classified under A. abietinum. The shoot color of Mathiasen's dwarf mistletoe was frequently blue-green, brown, yellow-brown, or red-brown, and plants were often highly glaucous, while the shoot color of the other subspecies were typically yellow-green or yellow, except for Wiens' dwarf mistletoe whose shoots are often green-brown or red-brown. Differences in host specificity and geographic distribution also distinguish the new subspecies from the other taxa of A. abietinum.
Se describen aquí dos nuevas subespecies de muérdago enano de oyamel (Arceuthobium abietinum, Viscaceae): Arceuthobium abietinum subsp. mathiasenii (muérdago enano de Mathiasen) y Arceuthobium abietinum subsp. grandae (muérdago enano del abeto grande). El primero, parasita al abeto blanco de las Montañas Rocosas en Nevada, Utah y Arizona, así como al oyamel de Durango en el norte de México; mientras que el segundo parasita al abeto grande en Oregón y Washington.
