Pervenne in Galleria dall'eredità del cardinale Leopoldo come opera di anonimo veneziano, in seguito inventariato con il nome di Tintoretto. Il Savoldo è pittore introspettivo, che coglie l'intima contraddizione tra l'originale cultura lombarda e la poetica veneta, cui culturalmente aderisce. Non è interessato all'impeto scenografico e drammatico del Tiziano, ma piuttosto riprende la malinconica meditazione del Giorgione isolata in una immobilita' senza tempo: si veda in proposito l'altra opera del Savoldo in Galleria, la "Maddalena" proveniente dalla donazione Contini-Bonacossi. Attentissimo ai particolari, tendenza che gli deriva dalla cultura pittorica fiamminga, rifugge da atteggiamenti oratori e sceglie temi che non si prestano alla narrazione e ad elementi di carattere esornativo, ma soggetti che si prestano ad una sorta di intima divagazione psicologica. Un disegno preparatorio per una testa di apostolo, ante 1553, è conservatao al Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi (n. 12803) ed un'altro con uno studio di panneggio, in Svezia, collezione Pontus de la Gardia.
