Transhumanism is one of the main “ideologies of the future” that has emerged in recent decades. Its program for the enhancement of the human species during this century pursues the ultimate goal of ...immortality, through the creation of human brain emulations. Therefore, transhumanism offers its fol- lowers an explicit eschatology, a vision of the ultimate future of our civilization that in some cases coincides with the ultimate future of the universe, as in Frank Tipler’s Omega Point theory. The essay aims to analyze the points of comparison and opposition between transhumanist and Christian eschatologies, in particular considering the “incarnationist” view of Parousia. After an introduction concern- ing the problems posed by new scientific and cosmological theories to traditional Christian eschatology, causing the debate between “incarnationists” and “escha- tologists,” the article analyzes the transhumanist idea of mind-uploading through the possibility of making emulations of the human brain and perfect simulations of the reality we live in. In the last section the problems raised by these theories are analyzed from the point of Christian theology, in particular the proposal of a transhuman species through the emulation of the body and mind of human beings. The possibility of a transhumanist eschatology in line with the incarnationist view of Parousia is refused.
Following the idea that films are excellent cultural items that help to transmit philosophical knowledge and skills to students, in this paper we propose the use of Alex Garland’s films, exemplified in his works Ex Machina (2015), Annihilation (2018) and Devs (2020) for students to acquire knowledge and philosophical skills. These films deal with philosophical issues such as the mind-body duality, the possibility of a robot being understood as a human being, morality or lack thereof in the laws of nature, or strong determinism, among others. They are, therefore, a magnificent source of philosophical knowledge that can be used in both secondary and university education.
The article explores the cybernetic utopian ideals of transhumanism and posthumanism, focusing particularly on the concept of the singularity, which incorporates both scientific and religious ...dimensions. This investigation subsequently leads to an in-depth examination of temporal concepts within the broader discourse surrounding the disenchantment thesis in secular modernity. Drawing on the framework of multiple temporalities proposed by Lorenz Trein and Helge Jordheim, the article suggests a perspective that enables an understanding of diverse interpretations of history and the future as a dynamic interplay that transcends the binary opposition between (secular) science and religion.
The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) has not only made it possible to improve and optimize the processes carried out by users in systems, but has also made it possible to problematize the ...notion of the autonomous and individual subject in education. Transhumanist and posthumanist theories ponder the utopian place oftechnologies as an inter-species alliance that organizes itself to revitalize a devastated planet, inventing a new grammar of interdependence and hybridization that certifies the end of humanities (Haraway, 2019). Acting AI as a way to overcome the cosmic faith in technological solutions, whether secular or religious. In such a sense, it is possible to expose that AI enables a fertile field of inquiry regarding the ways of teaching and learning in virtual environments dismissing the autonomy, individuality and rationality of pedagogical mediation that preserves the humanistic gaze. Therefore, this article seeks to offer an introduction to the transhumanist positions associated with the concept of artificial intelligence in relation to educational digital environments.
By enabling users to digitally monitor their health and behaviour, wearable technologies foster the perspective of the quantified self, a cultural phenomenon emphasising personal improvement through ...self-tracking. This vision, in turn, provides a basis for new forms of social engagement. In this netnographic study, we explore a brand community for users of the Fitbit wearable device. Our analysis reveals two structural dynamics - material agency and quantitative anchoring - which create a foundation for what we label 'accidental transhumanism', a transitional movement towards a transhumanist vision based on self-quantification, self-extension, and integration with technology. We further highlight the social engagement mechanisms, including motivating empowerment, friendly rivalry, and trusting engagement, that are built upon this foundation. Leveraging these findings, we theorise a novel model of the interaction of consumers and system artefacts in socio-technical assemblages. We refer to this novel phenomenon of brand community centred on self-quantification as quantified self-in-community, and consider both the beneficial and potentially deleterious impacts that it presents.
Among the many archetypal figures that are hidden behind transhumanist thought, the myth of Prometheus is, without a doubt, the one with the greatest semantic force. In the arts, hybrid artistic ...forms, at the border of different disciplines such as sculpture, performance, dance, biotechnology, information technology, seem to approach this sensibility. How do transhumanist artists use this post-modern "new grammar"? Through which iconographic, technical, symbolic elements the man of the transhumanists is translated into artistic representations? Our analysis, transdisciplinary and cross-cultural, aims to answer these questions through the reading of some works by artists closely next to transhumanism: Orlan, shaper of her own body through plastic surgery, Neil Harbisson, known as the first cyborg, or the Fronte Vacuo’s artists who hybridize themselves with computer slags and artificial intelligences.
