By enabling users to digitally monitor their health and behaviour, wearable technologies foster the perspective of the quantified self, a cultural phenomenon emphasising personal improvement through ...self-tracking. This vision, in turn, provides a basis for new forms of social engagement. In this netnographic study, we explore a brand community for users of the Fitbit wearable device. Our analysis reveals two structural dynamics - material agency and quantitative anchoring - which create a foundation for what we label 'accidental transhumanism', a transitional movement towards a transhumanist vision based on self-quantification, self-extension, and integration with technology. We further highlight the social engagement mechanisms, including motivating empowerment, friendly rivalry, and trusting engagement, that are built upon this foundation. Leveraging these findings, we theorise a novel model of the interaction of consumers and system artefacts in socio-technical assemblages. We refer to this novel phenomenon of brand community centred on self-quantification as quantified self-in-community, and consider both the beneficial and potentially deleterious impacts that it presents.
Among the many archetypal figures that are hidden behind transhumanist thought, the myth of Prometheus is, without a doubt, the one with the greatest semantic force. In the arts, hybrid artistic ...forms, at the border of different disciplines such as sculpture, performance, dance, biotechnology, information technology, seem to approach this sensibility. How do transhumanist artists use this post-modern "new grammar"? Through which iconographic, technical, symbolic elements the man of the transhumanists is translated into artistic representations? Our analysis, transdisciplinary and cross-cultural, aims to answer these questions through the reading of some works by artists closely next to transhumanism: Orlan, shaper of her own body through plastic surgery, Neil Harbisson, known as the first cyborg, or the Fronte Vacuo’s artists who hybridize themselves with computer slags and artificial intelligences.
Transhumanism has a great influence on the evolution of our society. It is defined as an ideology that perceives constant changes in a human being over the years. They are determined mainly by the ...unavoidable development of technology affecting i.a. creation of the first cyborgs or postmen. Transhumanism is also perceived in the use of various prostheses or implants as well as in wearable technologies and 3D printing. The aim of the study is to present the concept of transhumanism and its development, as well as to get to know the opinions of both scientists and respondents about this phenomenon. Their answers are not unambiguous, therefore in this article the author will strive to answer the question whether transhumanism is the future or perhaps the destruction of our civilization. The researcher used both qualitative data (analysis of existing data) and quantitative data (conducting a survey among respondents).
Transhumanism, as social movement and ideology, pushes for the technoscientific transcendence of the limits of the human. Some within the movement have also adopted terms like religion and ...spirituality to denote their own groups and goals and describe their metaphysical forays. Secularism, which is to contain religion and define its domain and boundaries clearly, and maybe eventually replace it, keeps generating religion and spirituality as its own effect. Transhumanism presents a complex technoscientific case of this. The question is not whether transhumanism is religious or is a religion but rather what kind of new formations and subjectivities, new allegiances and attractions, are emerging in the secular interplay of religion, spirituality, science, and technology, especially as put into play by transhumanism—that is, more broadly speaking, as put into play in the transitional human space in which technology, power, and ideology are changing the way we can be humans.
This paper argues that further investigation into a rhetor's subjectivity is needed when discussing comparative rhetoric methodology. While comparative rhetoricians have considered various ...methodological approaches within their scholarship there has been a limited attempt to acknowledge one's material surroundings during the comparing process. This manuscript touches upon recent methodologies within comparative rhetoric and examines their approaches, arguing that these methods should be reconsidered with a distributed subject in mind, one that is embedded within his or her ecological landscape. In revisiting the language that has defined our act of comparing we can reclaim the rhetor as a subject entangled within a dynamic rhetorical context, where human and non-human elements contribute to rhetorical invention. This paper looks to revisit comparative rhetoric scholarship and disrupt its human-centered methodologies by examining the work of posthuman scholars, raising a series of questions for comparative rhetoricians to consider when conceptualizing their approaches. In 2021, a report prepared by a committee called the History Group at Imperial College London, UK, recommended that the name of the 19th-century naturalist Thomas Henry Huxley be removed from the ...college building that now houses the mathematics and computing department. According to the report, he “espoused a racial hierarchy of intelligence, a belief system of ‘scientific racism’ that fed the dangerous and false ideology of eugenics; legacies of which are still felt today”. ...the authorities at Imperial have decided that, in contrast, Huxley's name will stay, but might be paired with that of an Imperial scientist from a disadvantaged minority. ...by considering the continuities and contrasts between Thomas Henry and Julian, Bashford has found a rich and compelling framework for a wider exploration of how ideas about natural history, evolutionary theory, and the intersections of science, race, class, and society developed during the 19th and early 20th centuries. What resulted—a blend of Darwinism and Mendelism along with the mechanistic insights into genetic mutations provided by the work of Thomas Hunt Morgan and others on fruitflies—was called the modern synthesis by Julian Huxley in a 1942 book of that title.
