The article compares different uses of the “Caliban” archetype in the construction of subaltern identities by the subalterns themselves. It focuses primarily on intellectuals of the periphery, ...delimiting “ideal types” of uses of Caliban. Based on an exhaustive survey of the character's uses, “archetypal images” are established that he could project from those uses. The central question is why this inversion of meaning was attractive to so many, that is, to seek self-identification with a character presented as a despicable being on a first reading. The final question is also whether it would still make sense to use a character like Caliban to project large human groups.
The article focuses on a philosophical issue of the Renaissance humanism in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The humanist tradition originated in Greece with the famous statement “Of all things man is ...the measure” (Protagoras of Abdera, 485-415 BCE), but it was not until the Renaissance that it reached its peak and became a doctrine. The article focuses on the humanism of the Renaissance, with its glorification of the image of the "giant man," which is mainly expressed in the work of William Shakespeare. By pointing out the nature of Renaissance humanism, the article emphasizes Hamlet's play as a typical work of Renaissance humanism.

This Teaching Note reviews a 2001 made-for-TV film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. Geoffrey Sax's production transposes the action into the streets of London where protests are erupting ...against racist police brutality, while the London Metropolitan Police struggles to remake its image and reestablish a sense of order. I have found that the film teaches very well alongside the play in my Introduction to Literature survey course at a public community college in New York.
