This paper discusses several issues concerning classroom management and the importance of group work strategies in ESP classes, such as classroom space and seating arrangements, discipline and ...students’ behavior, verbal and nonverbal communication, classroom routines and procedures, organizing the material, etc. The second part of the paper proposes a type of research to be implemented in the following academic year, with students majoring in Economic Sciences, based on the hypothesis that appropriate, flexible and modern group strategies implemented and continuously adjusted in ESP classes will enhance the students’ learning, entailing an evident development of their ESP skills.
► We examine the construction of complaints in service calls to a transport company. ► We examine how complaints are initiated and how they unfold. ► Complaints are initiated in opening sections and ...unfold over several turns. ► Face manifestations were observed throughout the complaint sequence.
This paper examines the construction of complaints in service calls to a Slovenian public transport service company. The findings reveal that the construction of complaints unfolds in a step by step manner over several turns. That the complaints are explicitly initiated in the opening sections of the calls, when customers proffer the reason for the call, and before customers’ details are established, is indicative of their high priority. After the facts and details of the complaints are discussed, the agent either offers, or does not offer, a solution; and, at this point, the call is brought to a close. Face manifestations were observed throughout the complaint sequences, as evidenced by the incidence of extreme case formulations, negative observations, threats, insults and non-affiliation with the complainant. The findings also suggest that the ways in which institutional agents manage the complaints reflects company's business practices affected by numerous bureaucratic barriers.
Introduction:
Few studies have focused on identifying distinctive strategies implemented for overcoming return-to-work (RTW) barriers perceived by people with common mental disorders (CMDs), and ...their impact on RTW. The study aimed to document the strategies used by occupational therapists to overcome RTW obstacles identified by people with CMDs, and to explore the impact of these strategies on employees’ self-efficacy.
Method:
Ten workers followed by three occupational therapists were recruited for this study. Based on the participants’ ROSES scores, the occupational therapists identified in a logbook the dimensions to be worked on and the strategies they implemented for each dimension. Data was analyzed with the use of thematic analysis and descriptive statistics.
Results:
Three dimensions of the ROSES were most frequently targeted by the occupational therapists: job demands, fear of relapse and difficult relation with the immediate supervisor. The main strategies used to overcome these obstacles were work-oriented and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based interventions. Most of the participants have increased their self-efficacy for RTW after using these strategies. Eighty percent of the participants returned to work at the end of the study.
Conclusion:
The use of work-oriented and CBT-based interventions by occupational therapists appears to be useful in improving participants’ self-efficacy and promoting their return to work.
General practitioners (GPs) played a crucial role in limiting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many GPs experienced they did not have the prerequisites to provide adequate care. However, GPs ...developed approaches that helped them to provide care to patients through various job crafting strategies. The aim of this study is to identify how job crafting strategies were deployed by GPs at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden and the significance of the strategies on their work situation.
A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews. The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis with job crafting as the conceptual framework for the analysis process.
Primary healthcare in five healthcare regions in Sweden.
Fourteen GPs participated in individual interviews.
In their endeavours to organise and provide care, GPs shaped the task, relational and cognitive boundaries of their work. GPs felt proud about finding new ways of working when given room to manoeuvre. Intensified collaboration between healthcare professionals made GPs more confident in their clinical work. GPs expressed that they consequently felt stronger in their professional role through what they accomplished in the organisation of care.
The results suggest that the job crafting strategies GPs used were meaningful to them in clinical practice. Knowledge about how GPs' job crafting strategies were deployed might be useful for healthcare organisations in preparing for future health crises. Taking advantage of GPs' experiences and strategies is considered important for promoting sustainable working conditions for GPs in the future.
In recent years, social media platforms and, especially, instant messaging applications have been witnessed to play an increasingly important role as a communication channel among employees to build ...effective organizations, which results in a considerably large part of individual activities moving onto the cyber-based workspace. In this paper, we collect the unique real-world data set from a WeChat-based work performance evaluation system built and used by a medium-sized organization in China, in order to study the optimization of the employees' work strategies, especially the work time determination, with the purpose of maximizing the total utility comprised of the work and nonwork utilities. In the system, the performance evaluation is completely based on the employees' work reports and includes three major measures including score, level, and rank. First, we formulate a dynamic optimization model, incorporating the work utility into the reputational and the substantive utility, so as to examine the employees' work strategy. Then, we conduct both empirical studies and computational experiments to make an in-depth analysis to probe the employees' optimal work strategies. The main results include: 1) the optimal work time is greatly affected by the weight of the reputational utility; 2) the optimal work time is always the threshold time to achieve a certain level or a certain rank; 3) the total utility is with the trend of decreasing after increasing with the growing work time; and 4) the optimal work time does not always make the employee achieve a good work performance.
Occupational ApplicationsWork strategies changed following a participatory workplace intervention among office-based employees with flexible work arrangements (FWA). Also, the intervention likely led ...to clearer rules and routines for FWA within the work group. As FWA increases, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be important to revise work strategies for both the individual and the work group. The results of this study are relevant in the context of interventions that can support organizations and employees in adopting work strategies promoting good working conditions and health in FWA.
•Unexpected situations at work can place new workers at risk of being injured, especially in manual handling tasks.•Dealing with unforeseen events can also play an important role in developing ...competencies at work for apprentices.•The social environment is crucial to ensure that an apprentice will develop valuable strategies in unexpected situations that will prevent him to get injured.•In the training, opportunity to deal with unexpected situations is important, but the risk of injuries must be controlled.
Inexperienced workers are more prone to experience occupational injuries. By definition, a work accident is a sudden or unforeseen event that contributes to an injury. This pilot study aimed to understand the relationship between unforeseen events, their contributing factors, the responses to these events, and the injury risks among young apprentices.
Nine apprentices (15–17yr old) in different companies were videotaped whilst doing normal work tasks (total 79.5h). Unforeseen events were described according to an observation grid constructed for this study; the following variables were characterized: unforeseen events, immediate contributing factors, strategies (individual vs. collective) and injury risk. All unexpected events observed by trained raters were coded (n=554). Simple logistic regressions were made to determine the odd of being at risk of injury. The variable “activity sector” was used as control. Falling/dropping object (25.5%) is the most prevalent unexpected event (UE). The most important contributing factor is related to Material/products (44.1%), and Individual strategies were most frequently used by apprentices (81.5%). However, regressions showed that UE related to Handling and Equipment are the most associated with injury risks.
Collective strategies to manage UE seem to have a protective role. This study illustrates the duality associated with unexpected event: the potential of those events to develop competencies or the risk of injury associated. Some implications for schools, decision-makers and employer are discussed.
The Association for Specialists in Group Work's (ASGW) Special Initiatives Committee created a document offering 10 strategies for intentionally using group work to transform hate, facilitate ...courageous conversations, and enhance community building. Group workers can utilize these methods and resources to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among group members in all types of groups and in various settings. These strategies provide a road map for group workers to use in navigating the complex process of unifying diverse individuals in a way that celebrates their commonalities and differences, while fostering difficult conversations in various group settings.
