Many of the participants in this study were either those who had one of their parents passed away or suffering from a disease or those whose parents were nursing each other, so the participants, who ...were grandchildren, were taking care of their grandparents all by themselves. The nursing-care insurance, while available, provides only limited benefits if there is a family member living together, and the distressing situation is left unattended especially for younger-generation caretakers. Meanwhile, none of the participants was receiving any livelihood subsidies for economic support but was in needy conditions, as they felt solitude and estrangement as well as uncertainty for the future. They had little association with the same generation. Therefore, it would be our pressing task to grasp the existence of these younger generation caretakers, starting from our own backyard such as schools, communities, etc. so that those who have difficulty in participating in family functions may not be isolated from society to have their future closed in or they may not have themselves isolated. Support to care for younger generation caretakers must be given urgently in such a way as to cause no new stigma as we respect and value the feelings of the younger generation
In his 2008 book, The Good Citizen: How a Younger Generation is Reshaping American Politics, Russell Dalton argued that young people are `reshaping American politics'. Dalton's good citizen thesis ...argued that young people, inthe United States and in other advanced democracies, are much more likelyto engage in non-electoral forms of participation (such as attending a demonstration and signing a petition) and less likely to participate in electoral forms of activity (such as voting and joining a political party). Using data from the International Social Survey Programme this article examines the extent to which this is the case in Australia. In doing so, the author finds that non-electoral forms of engagement are much more attractive to the young, and the influence of electoral politics seems to be waning. This, it is argued, could have large effects on the future of Australian democracy.

Aaron Martin's (2012) recent article is the first to use survey data to compare the political participation of young people with that of older age groups in Australia. As such, it adds to our ...empirical knowledge of political participation, particularly by emphasising the changing focus of young people's engagement. Yet, like most mainstream, and especially quantitative, political participation researchers, Martin does not engage adequately with the growing, more critical literature). This response raises some of the issues emphasised in this literature, relating them directly to Martin's contribution. It has four sections: firstly, a brief consideration of Martin's main conclusions; secondly, a discussion of putative reasons for the change in forms of participation; thirdly, a consideration of broader forms of political participation; and finally, a consideration of the relationship between identity and political participation, which is at the core of most broader discussions of the latter.
