This case-control cross-sectional study investigated a possible association between interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene polymorphisms (1663T/C, 251A/T) and myocardial infarction (MI) among patients with type 2 ... diabetes in the Slovene population (Caucasians). The second objective was to investigate the impact ofIL-8 gene polymorphisms on serum IL-8levels. The study population for this cross-sectional analysis consisted of 143 patients with MI and 321 patients with no history of coronary artery disease (control group). The study failed to demonstrate the association of 1663 T/C polymorphism and 251 A/T polymorphism of the IL-8 gene with MI in type 2 diabetic patients. Moreover, it also failed to demonstrate a significant affect of the tested IL-8 gene polymorphisms (1663T/C, 251A/T) on serum IL-8levels in type 2 diabetics. SerumIL-8levels in 78 diabetics were not significantly higher than those of 25controls without diabetes. Additionally, serum IL-8levels in 18 diabetics with MI were not statistically significantly different from those of 60 diabetics without coronary artery disease. It may be concluded that the testedpolymorphisms of the IL-8 gene (1663T/C, 251A/T) are not associated withMI. Therefore, they may not be used as genetic markers of MI in type 2 diabetes.
