The article brings the results of the research regarding the vocabulary of Slovene children living in Porabje, who attend Slovene language classes. We were interested in the language (either Slovene ... or Hungarian) in which children were able to name a greater number of notions. The productive vocabulary can be used as a starting point for ascertaining the prevailing language with bilingual persons. Namely, sociolinguistic conditions in the Porabje, presented in the introductory part, draw attention to the tendency of dropping the Slovene language in public as well as private domains. That is why we often come across the assumption, that the loss of Slovene language is most pronounced in the youngest generations. The materials were gathered by means of an associative test. Children of the fourth class of the Porabje elementary school wrote down, within a limited period of time, words induced by an impulse arising from four lexical domains. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the word materials was conducted. A special analysis of each lexical domain was performed and the Slovene materials analyzed with regard to the kind of deviation from the general colloquial language. Materials from separate lexical domains were classified into fields of meaning, and an overlapping of the Slovene fund with the Hungarian was ascertained. The analysis of vocabulary by lexical domains confirmed the assumption that with the majority of pupils the Slovene language is, to a lesser degree, the home language, therefore not the first, prevailing language.
