    Benthic communities in the Gulf of Trieste, diverse associations of sponges, mollusks, brittle stars and ascidians, suffered from anoxia several times after the first massive mortality of benthic ... organisms in 1983. To investigate the repopulation potential of an empty biotope, a typical sediment biotope depopulated during anoxia, large containers of temporarily frozen sediment material before the experiment were exposed to settling larvae, fishes and climbing organisms. The containers were placed on the sediment bottom at the depht of 24 m. The long-term experiments began in September 1993; the monthly experiments were carried out each month from September 1993 to October 1994...
