  • Cross-border cooperation in the upper Adriatic

    This essay examines local developements in cross-border cooperation and factors which support or hinder cross-border communication in the Upper Adriatic. In these borderlands the planned enlargement ... of the European Union will open up new perspectives not only for economic cross-border integration, but also for social cohesion and confrontation between Western European (state-based) and Central European (culture based) experiences of nationalism,as well as sub-national and inter-national regionalisms. The area studied presently includes several borderlands between Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, with common past experiences of multinational coexistence in a single state. The essay first reviews developments and functional aspects of cross-border cooperation in the region, and then discusses processes of convergence and divergence. Further integration perspectives are considered on this basis.
