    Jevšnik, Mojca
Article delineates the essential characteristics of anorexia and bulimia nervosa, which are the most frequent among eating disorders. It emphasizes the multifactorial causality, wich no single basic ... cause having been found to account for all cases of this still very enigmatic syndrome. e in common is their belief that through starvation they have found the way to cope with problems, stress and anxiety. For an evaluation of the epidemiological state of anorexia and bulimia nervosa in Slovenia, the indicators available are the data about hospital treatment and mortality, if present. The present health information system does not yield data concerning prevalence and morbidity incidence. The evaluation was made for the 1979-1995 period. Hospital treatment rate was calculated and characteristics of the differences between sexes, age groups and timing of the phenomenon were estimated. According to International Classification of the Diseases (ICD-9) the disorder was observedas Anorexia nervosa (307.1). Comparisons with other countries are limited owing to different criteria and manner of presentation. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are undoubtedly increasing and there are obvious differences between the sexes that is evident from our data.
