Colledge shares her experience as a physician while attending to an older patient. She imparts that on the course of their conversation, she reflects that such conversations are always peppered with her self-deprecating remarks while wondering the need to broaden the approaches to help those who felt persistent loneliness. At 95, her patient expresses how she felt so lonely, a feeling that coexists with social isolation and a distinct entity defined as a discrepancy between a person's desired and actual social relationships. However, research has given loneliness the attention it deserves as an important health issues and efforts have been made to create resources to address the needs of lonely people, with much of this work focused on services and programs to help strengthen existing relationships or build new connections.
