Povey examines the study conducted by Julie Beadle-Brown, Rachel Roberts, and Richard Mills titled Person-centered Approaches to Supporting Children and Adults with Autism Apectrum Disorders. One of the key principles of person-centered planning is partnership with parents. This is also one of the foundations of the SPELL framework. Drawing on parental and familial knowledge is key to developing a full, vibrant and functional picture of the individual with autism which can frame their person-centered plan and ongoing support. This is illustrated in undertaking an assessment, when families may be able to tell the assessor about behaviors which were evident in childhood but have long since diminished. In times of stress and anxiety, particularly in a period of transition, these behaviors are likely to re-emerge.
