An extensive monitoring system of high cell density cultivations (HCDC) with Escherichia coli was developed. It is based on at-line measurements of the main carbon source glucose, the nitrogen source ammonia and the undesired by-product acetate using flow analysis techniques. Besides, MATLAB® was connected to the SCADA system MFCS/win via OPC. Experiments were carried out with two different strains, wild type strain E. coli K12 TG1 (DSMZ 6056) and E. coli JM 105 with green fluorescence protein (GFP). Final cell densities up to 140 gl-1 were reached
