In the field of polymer-composites, extensive work has been conducted on combining various fillers in the polymer matrix for improvement in tribological performance. However, notable gap exists in ... understanding whether the improvement is attributed to the type of filler material or its size, particularly in water-lubricated conditions. The study addresses this lack of understanding by simultaneously examining the impact of filler combinations and their scale on the tribological performance in polymer/steel contacts. The combination effect is evaluated by combining various micro-size fillers in Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). These fillers include of short carbon fibers, graphite, and hexagonal-boron nitride. Further, to evaluate the scale effect, one of the fillers is incorporated in combination of micro and nano sizes, while maintaining equal filler concentration in the composition for comparison. Results imply the selected fillers to work synergistically, reducing the coefficient of friction by 75 %, reaching a value of 0.06, and the specific wear rate by two orders of magnitude to 2 × 10-7 mm3/Nm, compared to pure UHMWPE. The influence of the composite scale is also noted, as the nano-compositions had 40 % lower friction in comparison to similar micro-composition. Further analysis of worn surface suggests the improvement to be related with better transfer film coverage on steel disc, a higher graphitic content in the transfer material and lack of exposed fibers on the composite surface.
